What is the smarter buy?

Thread Starter
I'm currently running a 2600k overclocked with a custom watercooling loop with a single 580gtx using a Corsair AX850. I'll be upgrading to a second 580gtx because a single 580gtx on battlefield 3 isn't cutting it for me.

What would my smartest buy be for my upgrade? I understand I could slide by with 850 but I would like some breathing room for upgrades in the future.

Corsair AX1200 @ $256
Corsair Gold AX1200 (CMPSU-1200AX)

I think you might be able to slide by with the 850w with 580 SLI

No, don't even bother with those, if you are going to pay a good $250 for a power supply, at least buy the best of the best(the king of 1200 watt power supplies). The Antec High Current Pro HCP-1200 smokes those two power supplies that you have listed, that's why its called the king of 1200 watt power supplies. Get a 1200 watt psu, so later on, you can add another if you get a pretty reasonable price.

AX850 is fine for 580 SLI.

Phaedrus/FiX PSU calculator.

You wouldn't just be "sliding" by... it is plenty.

/agree

I just installed a 850 yesterday because I will be SLIing 580s in the future. You can slide by with a 750, 850 is your ideal target Wattage.

850w is the recommended power for 580's SLI.

Do you like wasting your money ? Plus a PSU has its best efficiency at ~80% load....

A GOOD 800-850w will be good if you overclock to the max.

Do you overclock? if not then 700w will be fine.

Do you BOINC/Fold? If so 800-850w will work if you do not overclock and if you do overclock then get a 1000w psu.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to go ahead and keep my 850 and see how it goes. Would using a kill a watt be a good way to see how much power I'm pulling? I went ahead and ran the calculator and it's saying about 790w. Do you think that is too close considering it doesn't account for CPU overclocking?

Thanks!
