one is running an early i3 and the other has a q8300. both fine playing stalker COP in dx 11.

would clocking mine up to 3.2ghz sort it out? could do with it being playable until the new year when i might finally get chance to upgrade the mobo and chipset.

man, I already replied. Check your GPU usage in games with v-Sync off. USe RivaTuner for that...

If GPU usage is low that you have a major bottle neck. If it is above 70% you are ok. Not perfect, but ok.

rivatuner hasnt been my friend recently so ive been using msi afterburner. just did roughly 7 minutes in game v-sync off and checked the graph and the line is all over the place. ive got a low of 15 and a high of 99. it only dipped that low once but was up and down like a yoyo anywhere between 58 and 85, 65 and 96 etc etc you get the idea. is that line supposed to be static, stable or like mine was and fluctuating up and down?

aslong as it hits 99% then its fine , it wont always use 99% of the gpu it might not have to . But getting 99% usage is a good indication that your not being bottlenecked .

I think you should OC your cpu to 3.8 - 4 GHz and the problem will go away .

cheers. im no expert but i assume that as the game renders different levels of detail the usage will go up and down accordingly so it will never be 100% all of the time.

Im not overly bothered as i know i'll be upgrading chipsets somewhen in the new year but it would be nice to make things 100% playable for now. especially as BF3 is imminenet. although i can see myself struggling a little with that. will try clocking it up slowly to see if it becomes more stable in-game.

you will definatly see a difference with a new cpu ..

get an i5 2500k for your gtx580 , thats the best thing you can do ... you wont be playing BF3 with that processor or ram , even though you have a gtx580 the rest of your system cannot keep up with it .

You really need to upgrade , the gtx580 is way ahead of anything in your case .. you should see night and day difference between a 260 and a 580 , your cpu wont allow that .

if the game you tested has no FPS limit, you should see 100% GPU usage ALL THE TIME (except when loading a map ofc). That is the ideal case which would mean that your CPU is not holding you back. Your CPU currently let you use about 70% of the GPU power on average, which is not bad. That shows that even with the most powerful graphic card q6600 is still a decent chip. If you OC it I am sure you will be able to almost remove all the bottle neck. If you succeed to completely remove it, even with i5-2500K you will hardly see any increase in frame rate.

up to 3.2ghz. also set my ram timings at 1:1 while i was in the bios. no difference at all. exactly the same if im honest. the gpu usage is just as erratic as before. if ive got a spare minute this weekend i may crank it up to 3.4ghz just to make doubly sure. if that doesnt sort it i'll just wait until i upgrade the mobo/chipset/ram in the new year to play it. any other suggestions?

3 to 3.2? That's not much. But try to find a way to measure your GPU usage and if your frames per second increases in some benchmarks.... (you have free Stalker CoP and Crysis benchmarks for example)
