[Creative]CREATIVE Unleashes Sound Blaster RECON3D - Page 35

That just sound like your gear was the weakest link. The X-FI HD PCIE when used with good speakers and headphones, do not sound the same as the XTreme music/Gamer. If your headphones and speakers isn't up to par. Then your not gonna notice the difference between the two cards.

The gear is very important, the same thing can happen if the user have great speakers and headphones, but sub par source.

I would just stick with what you have. @baba From my experience it's just easier to tell, everyone is diff. and to add to it i have tinnitus, so it may change person to person as well. I think if they can lower the price a bit it would fit well with most fps gamers needs. It's not a bad card just not great.

I finally got tired of not having speakers, so picked up some Creative T-40's. They are electronic fart machines. For the same price, I swapped out w/ M-Audio's AV40's. Much better, but still muddy on the fart end w/ super tight sweet spot. The KRK's have moved to my short list, but I'm still balking @ the dual rear power switches and lack of front volume knobs. Is there some thing that sounds better than the AV40's w/ knobs in front...that might come close the KRK's? Also, I'm a huge fan of the front port! thumb.gif

My God. This sound card series is complete and utter trash compared to the X-Fi. As I'm a Creative fanboy I bought the Recon3D with the I/O drive, BIG mistake. First I didn't bother to read they completely stripped the Recon3D chipset of everything that made the X-Fi one of the top audio cards money could buy. No hardware OpenAL, NO hardware ASIO 2.0 support, in fact NO hardware acceleration of any kind. No 7.1 support for even analog connections, no MIDI, Dolby Digital / DTS passthrough via SPDIF, no optical input. The X-Fi chip was one of the most advanced audio processors ever made for consumer purchase. This entire line is just a slap in the face. The sound quality is complete and utter crap. I'm almost tempted to say the higher end integrated audio chips sound better with my HD 595 and 598's. I had this "sound card", or should I say "software card" ripped out of my rig in less than 30 minutes with my X-Fi Elite back in it's PCI slot.

No hardware acceleration? Why would they do that?

Windows 7/Vista does not support hardware accelerated sound so your X-Fi was software too. Also, ASIO only really matters if you mix or produce music (even then one would opt for a digital audio interface).

I do agree that this sound card is meh.

It actually does through openal although I'm not worried about audio processing bottlenecking my i5 2500k.

I upgraded from AV40s as well. One of the reasons I went for the Matrix was so I could use it as a pre-amp for my KRKs. If you are interested in an upgrade you could consider the Audioengine A5s which have the front volume adjustment and line-in at the top. They are about $300 on Amazon right now so about $50 cheaper than what I paid for my KRKs. Here is a good review comparing the two.

I think this is meant to be an update to the X-Fi Titaniums rather than the entire X-Fi series.

If you like to play competitively and a lot of fps and racing games, and don't already have an x-fi or an other, then i can see this being a decent upgrade for a lot of users.

lol recon3d crap has no effect on your fps. it is no different than integrated audio card when it comes to effecting your gaming fps. it has no hardware acceleration for sound. no OpenAL, no direct sound, nothing. you'd get the same fps if you play your games on 10yr old AC97 integrated audio or creative recond3d.
