Worth starting folding?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone -

I am just fishing for a couple of opinions here. I don't have a desktop PC right now, but I did just drop a pretty penny on a yummy ASUS desktop replacement lappy. It's specs are in my sig.

First off I am just wondering if this system is even worth folding on? Second, would a CPU or GPU client benefit me more?

All opinions welcome

It's not worth it to fold on a laptop. The PPD/watt should be pretty good but the actual PPD wouldn't be to great. The GPU might be able to do something decent but that's all. Actually, it would be great if you tried running both clients and showed us your results

It'll fold fine... just watch your temps It'll get Hot Hot HOT!

I'd be interested to see how that GTX 560M does.

In my opinion the only time folding is not worth it is when you can't complete the work units in time. It's all about the research, not just the PPD. And like mach1 said it will most likely get pretty hot, especially if you try to do the CPU and GPU at the same time. I'd try just CPU first then just GPU and see what kind of temps/PPD you get. If it hasn't melted a hole in your desk then you can try with both.

Is it worth it? Depends on your motivation for folding in the first place. If you're out for high scores and competition, then no. If you're just looking to contribute to the cause, then folding on a solar powered calculator would be worth it. (That *would* be a cool calculator, eh?)

I say go for it. Tweak your power settings so it will dial back a bit when you're not there to monitor temps. Also, you can set the process to low priority when you're using the laptop.

I'd keep a temperature monitor turned on for sure but yes, worth it.

If its for the cause then yes its worth it. I used to run light duty work loads just fast enough to complete inside the window of opportunity for this reason. It allowed me to contribute without burning up my laptop.

I support folding on any machine capable of performing the workloads. The competition is fun yes, but its really the cause that catches the eye!

^^This.

Oh, and watch your power management settings too. The power profiles on laptops tend to want to shut them down when "not in use". When I fold on my laptop (like during fold-a-thons) I switch the power profile over to one that is "always on", oh and to address the heat, I keep one side propped up on something to get good airflow under neath to where the fan intakes are.

Oh, FWIW, my lappie isn't anything near what yours is, but it folds just fine and will complete a regular SMP unit within the deadline. I wouldn't want to try a -bigadv unit.
