Alright heres a question.

Do you think the next generation cards in SLI would require more then the AX 850W PSU?

So to SLI the newest cards from nvidia that come out next.

Makes me reconsider buying a new psu before getting a 2nd 580gtx. Sorry to hijack your thread some more but do you guys think I can get away with 580sli, with my CPU OCed to 3.8ghz? I know this psu is high quality.

Should be OKAY. My current system would pull roughly 788w IF I had 580's in SLI. With a 2600k clocked at 4.7Ghz, 1 HDD, 1 SDD, 2 DVD Drives (One BD) with the loop, pump, etc..

It depends on which cards you buy. If you buy whatever equivalent to the 590s they might come out with, then no because the 590s are like two 570s each or something (so it would be kinda like four 570s).

If you get whatever the equivalent is to today's 580s, then definitely. I mean a quality 850W unit is pretty much where it's at for having two 580s in a system.

They're constantly working toward making the cards consume less power because that's what we want.

most likely that wattage from the wall, take into account 85% efficieny that would be a total of 743w.

EDIT:

Im assuming that calculation is with the GPU's at stock or a mild overclock (not sure), overclocking them to the max , overvolting them etc may require something a little more ommph and that's why I said just get a quality 900/1000w for TRI SLI 570. TC correct me if im wrong.

There's one thing I learned about this calculator from the PSU experts here on OCN: the "System Load" should really be set to about 75% to 80% for most of us unless we're folding. People who are folding should choose 85% to 90%, especially if they're using both their CPU and video card(s) at the same time. Some people (like me), could probably even use 70%.

Using 80% system load with the settings in this screenshot results in 776W recommended with a minimum of 726W.

The system load is referring to how much of the system is under load. So 100% would be saying that everything that is drawing power from the PSU (even including little things like fans) are all at 100% load. So 80% would be saying that 80% of my system is at 100%.

If I do my system with 90% system load with a Capacitor Aging of 20% (by following their recommendation at the bottom of the page), I end up with 640W recommend and 590W minimum. However, I have a Kill A Watt, and I've never been able to get it to display more than about 495W (and I have tried very hard to do it). Now, 495W after 85% efficiency ends up being a system draw of about 420W from the PSU. For me to come close to 420W, I have to use 60% system load. If I choose No capacitor aging, then I have to use 70% system load to match my 420W.

So yeah, my PSU is very overkill for me.


To complicate things further, this PSU calculator's "Recommended" is likely referring to PSUs that have a peak capacity that at least matches or exceeds their recommended wattage.
