New xfx 6950

Thread Starter
Well I recently bought this 6950: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150549

I really like it, but it does not handle heat very well even though it has a massive cooler. At idle it boucnes around wildly as I open different windows 55-65C, then at furmark it maxes out at 100C, so I stop it. I run the fans at 50%, and 100% is just too loud. NO overclocking is done, and my case is very large and seems to have proper ventilation? What are some tips to lowering the temps on this, I really don't want to damage it, and I find it strange because my old 5830 never really broke 80C and was 40C idle...

Have you created a custom fan profile in Afterburner? I have an XFX 6950, albeit a reference one with the reference fan and it does run hot. I've just come to the conclusion that it always will. Mine is unlocked and overclocked though, but not very much. It just can't handle it.

Yes I have created a custom profile, and it seems to have dropped now its at 50-54 idle with a 78F ambient temp. What are your idle temps?

Edit: I have a non-reference card, I have heard there is a way to unlock shaders without getting the 6970 bios. Is this true?

The stock paste was not properly applied. Re-apply the thermal paste with MX-3 or MX-4.

MAYBE ... does your card have the DUAL BIOS Switch ?

Looking it up I can't find the answer ... EK Water Cooling has a different Model # non-reference XFX card listed with one (see pic below) so maybe yours does too, you'll have to look ... it will be that TINY little switch just near the X-Fire Bridge atop the card, might be hard to see, partially hiden by the plastic shroud.

XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 (HD-695X-CNFC)

IF your card has one ... follow my Step-by-Step guide to attempt unlocking the shadders ... IF it doesn't have one ... then NO you're ONLY option would be to HARD FLASH it, and you rin the risk of Bricking the card and maybe Voiding the Warranty ?

Is this with all xfx 6950, or just mine?

AND, there is no dual-bios switch.

Just yours. Only with one monitor connected, idle at 50-54°C and ambient 78°F, something is very wrong with the paste. Re-apply TIM will give you normal operating temperature.

Can I just RMA it? I don't know if I'm comfortable removing a gpu cooler.

You could if it is worth the wait and hassle. Also, there is no guarantee the next will be better than this one. All my new cards after tested not DOA, first thing I do is replacing the TIM.

Alright, well I left my comp on overnight and I found that it was at 43C, but the strange thing is that it jumps up to 53ish when I open Firefox... I really am unsure if the thermal compound is the problem.
