Can I restore with system image to smaller drive?

I apologize if this is the wrong section, but I have a box (not sig rig) with mirrored 3Gb/s 300GB Raptors as the boot drive and I was thinking about swapping those out for a pair of mirrored 6Gb/s 256GB SSD's (not 100 percent sure which). I was wondering if I could just swap out the drives and use the Windows disk to recover from system image, or what exactly would be the most painless to do this?

Honestly, I would just reinstall everything, then use a secondary mechanical drives for a page file-or just disable it-move all download folders and library directories to the mechanical, along with as many caches as possible.

Thanks. That is exactly what I was trying to avoid. There is only about 150GB on the boot drives, everything else is where it belongs in one of the other RAID arrays, and I just have no desire to do the whole 8 hours of installing crap again. I was hoping that I could just shrink the partitions and make a system image swap out the drives and restore and everything would be the same but 9001 times faster. If I can't Mushkin or Corsair will have to wait for my 1000 dollars.

As for a choice of SSD's I highly recommend Crucial M4's

You're going from HD's to SSD's. That gets a little complicated b/c there are certain services that are disabled when you install on an SSD. I would just go a head and do a reinstall...though you don't have too. You can most likely use windows disk recover to do the image swap, but i;m not 100% sure. If you want you can try clonezilla or Easus Todo back up to make a system image.

Once the RAID is built and you image the system back you should check out this thread as well. http://www.overclock.net/ssd/929553-...p-secrets.html
