Review my first HTPC build

Thread Starter
Hey guys this is my first HTPC build, so I'm looking for some feedback. Buying parts from Directron.com since it's the cheapest I can find the case, which is the only part that I'm set on.

USE: For the most part I will be sending various media from my desktop to this. It will be used on a 55" and will not see any gaming (for now).

Case: Thermaltake DH102
http://www.directron.com/vh2001bns.html

Mobo:ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM
http://www.directron.com/p8h61mlecsrev3.html

CPU:i3 2100
http://www.directron.com/bx80623i32100.html

RAM:Corsair XMS3 8GB
http://www.directron.com/x8gx3m2a1600c9.html

PSU: Antec Basiq 550 Plus
http://www.directron.com/basiq550plus.html

So some questions I have:
1. What kind of power do I need from a video card?
2. Should I find a mobo with integrated instead of stand-a-lone video card?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

1. Best HTPC video card is GT 430. Strolled on over to AVS forums and the recommendation was that. A lot of guys here I see having those in their HTPC builds.

here's a low profile one too:

2. If you want to stream HD well don't go with on board.

8GB for a HTPC? Seems a bit overkill. 4 will do fine. But seeing how low kits are, go with what you want.
Get a lower end card I like ATI myself.

That CPU mobo OCmbination has integrated graphics so no wories there. Will be fine as a HTPC.

You dont need so much power from the PSU. Recomend you look at something modular like this seasonic though as its tough to keep cabling tidy in a HTPC case.

You may also wish to explore the AMD llano 3850 CPus/socket FM1 Mobo as a combination. THeir integrated GPU is a lot better than Intels.

There's no need for a gpu. I have a last Gen i3 in my htpc. Handles video and audio great. Just get a different board that has HDMI.

Thanks everyone for the comments. The AMD APU is very inciting, I think I might go with that. Any heat issues? Is the stock cooling quiet?

I'm also looking at some HyperX 4GB kit, since it's a good price.

The modular power supply is a great idea, anyone know of anything slightly cheaper?

You definitely do want a video card instead of Intel integrated, as their integrated will not play back pure 24fps blu ray correctly. There is a bug that intel hasn't fixed that causes screen tearing, and it's due to hardware and isn't going away any time soon.

Grab a 6570 for $70, and you'll be hassle free. It also has hdmi 1.4 so you'll be able to play back 3D as well if you're do inclined.

Thanks for the feedback! Any substantial benefit of this opposed to going the AMD A8 3850 route?

The i3 will be quicker per core, and the a8 3850 will have similar gfx power on die to that discrete gpu, as well as be faster for anything that is highly threaded.

35$ AMIR for a good modular psu.

Btw you have selected the most expensive htpc case i've seen. Most htpc builds are cheaper than that.
