Mixing cards

Thread Starter
Hi. I'm new to this forum and I'm still nawbie with my PC. So my question is it possible to mix my 5850 with for example 6850. If not with what card under £200 it would be best mixing my 5850?

Thanks

I don't believe CF compatibility spans between generations.. your best option by far is to get an equal card.. any other 5850 with same framebuffer and clock frequencies will do..

Crossfire performance always scales according to the slowest card.. so if you buy a 5870, it will be restricted by the 5850.. conversely, if you buy a 5830 or lower, it will restrict the 5850.

Just so you know, the numbering models of performance levels changed between generations.. an HD6850 card has significantly less performance than an HD5850, which is closer to HD6950 performance.

HD-5850 w/ HD-5970 = BEST, but over budget ... so w/ HD-5870 = Your Option

Get another 5850. They're great cards and are cheap in the marketplace.

$125-150. I probably recommend this daily already... At what point should I just make it my signature? lol

Besides...

5850>6850. Although the 6850 is new the 6xxx series was meant to be a budget series if I remember correctly... Whereas the older 5xxx was meant for raw performance.

Proof<--here!

nice suggestion, but can you get an HD5970 under 200 quid?

HD5970 uses two HD5870 cores, not 5850, so it has more shader cores and can be clocked higher..

Just to put it bluntly, if you mix cards, you will always lose some potential performance gain.. mixing an HD5870 with an HD5970 clocked at 5870 frequencies is essentially using 3 of the same GPU.. any other situation is not the case.

So, the answer to your original question is, Yes, you can mix cards. However, if you ask a further question like; Is mixing cards in CF the most optimal configuration? The answer is , No.

Oh I would forgot. I'm afraid that my socket wont be enough for 2 5850.
My pc spec:

AMD Phenom II x6 1090T
Asus M4A78LT-M
8 GB ram not sure what company ...
Socket Win Power Plus 750 W
and my 5850

If any other info will be needed I can find it but not sure what for looking for more.

You could if you had lucid hydra chip like me in my mobo but scaling is horrible and the chip even alows you to combine amd and nvidia cards
