Build a low budget farm

Thread Starter
I am looking to build a low budget farm but still get the most out of the system with PPD and WUs. By low budget I mean under $450 including shipping since I live in Hawaii (and its expensive to ship here). I plan on making around 2 systems. They will main sit on a shelf in my room.

what do you mean
by farm?
He means folding farm. A rig that just sits there and makes points.

I am interested in something around this price point aswell.
I was just going to let mine be an open case and use an older PSU, HDD I have sitting around with a 2500K P67 8GB ram.

2500K-$219
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB-$52
P67-Pro-$169
Corsair CX430-$45

Total $485 from Newegg. Sure others will chime in with even cheaper options.

I may even just run linux from the USB drive/cd depending. Which I know if the system shuts down, I lose everything but I plan on the having the client installed on it.

The read/write times would be horrible.

True, I guess a 80gb drive would do
40GB would be suitable as-well
you may get away with using 4GB of ram but i guess that depends on if you want to do big/hugadv

so for a linux folding farm i would say
40GB SATA/IDE HDD
CPU I5 2500K or I7 2600K for big/hugadv
a good quality SB motherboard not sure what ones for intel
and if you want to fold on GPU`s i may be mistaken but 460`s might be a good bet
post #8 of 34
4gig would be plenty i it's dedicated, preferable to spend a bit extra on speed than capacity with bigadv.

If you can afford it, if you have to save a bit longer,a 2600K is much more preferable than a 2500K. Much higher PPD (50k vs 80k) on hugeadv, and not much more power, if any noticeable.

You can build these for about $100 less than your budget per machine. And other's can probably cut a few bucks here and there.

Case
mobo
PSU
CPU
RAM

Uhh, I thought we were trying to maximize ppd with the given budget?
Those 4 cores just don't get a lot of ppd because they can't do bigadv
