Linux or Windows? Help me decide.

Thread Starter
I've built a new server, however I am unsure which OS would be better. To help you help me decide, read on.

I will be using the box for the following:
- FTP
- Website
- Game Servers (eg: css, half-life, etc. LAN ONLY!!!)
- Video streaming (almost like a HTPC but not so much)

During a LAN (I usually have one with mates fortnightly) someone may not be able to bring their pc, in which case I will have them use the server. Which is why I'm stuck, because if I install Linux as an OS, it means I'd have to run wine. And with only a 5900XT + AMD Athlon XP CPU it will suffer. Whereas if I installed Windows it would have more boost.

To make it clear, I am NOT wanting to dual-boot.
So which OS do you think would be better?

Thankyou,
sktfreak.

I'd go with Windows if you don't have to buy an extra copy to put on your server. Just for the added convenience and fun of having a friend over who can then play.

Linux is free and does all of these things perfectly while maintaining stability.

This is where it becomes hard, wine will run hl based games decently. Windows just does it a lot better but it's not free. If you don't care about your friend and when it comes down to gaming performance I'd say get linux, if you do care about him then get windows.

Today,Windows can work as a server perfectly fine, without the need of Linux, the only thing is that it costs.Besides that you dont have to worry about the hassle of your friend coming and not being able to play.

I have a Windows Serial Key that I haven't yet used, which if I decide to use Windows I will use. I've installed Linux on previous servers, as well as Windows and I find Linux is easier to use, more configurable, more secure and I love a console rather than GUI. However wine has always been buggy for me... which is why I'm rooting towards Windows.

Thanks for your input.

Win7pro is like 19$, worth every cent as with linux you have to be almost Linux GURU to set game servers and all the settings.

I would go with linux to begin with, and if it gives you any problems you could just get a copy of windows for it. Also, for you HTPC needs, have you checked out XBMC? As an OS it won't be capable of many of the things you want, but it could be a useful program for watching movies/tv shows and listening to music.

I vote Linux like debian Mint, or something with rolling distribution. Then go buy an old pentium 2 for your friend, install windows 98, and tell him he can use the server if he wants to. HA HA HA HA. Seriously, go with Linux for your server.
