At my store that's what the normal 2GB 6950's come in. It's not a Dirt3 edition though.

Okay, thanks everyone.

I've sent a lengthy and detailed E-mail to queries at Scan and have requested that I exchange whatever it is that I've been given for a proper Dirt 3 edition, hopefully they will oblige or tell me it's just a package thing and send me a coupon, either would be fine really.

I have searched a while in the net and found no review of the the Sapphire HD6950 1GB with dual fan. But judging from the pics and spec of the 2 cards in Sapphire website, the 1GB card and the 2GB are identical except the amount of VRAM.

Now, the 2GB card has eight 256MB memory modules (see the two red rectangles in the pic below) and they are all on the top side of the PCB. Therefore, you cannot tell whether it is a 2GB or 1GB card by looking at the back of the PCB.

So, try your best to peek through the heatsink from all angles to check and see if you see these eight modules.

If you see only four, then it is certainly a 1GB card.

However, even if you see eight modules, it is still not certain that it is 2 GB card as Sapphire might use eight 128MB memory modules for the 1GB version (although this is not very likely).

I've looked in there and I'm sure I can see 2 rows [EDIT: 1 column, 1 row 'surrounding' the GPU (extra clarity)] of RAM chips (eight). I've googled all the little numbers to no avail in the hope that there would be model no.
I think I'll just send it back unless it's a case of run out packaging.

It could also be Sapphire ran out of 2GB box and so they used the 1GB boxes by putting a '2GB' sticker on. So, the card you have could be a 2GB card. It is uncertain until and unless you put the card into a system and boot up to find out. This is definitely not your fault.

But regardless, the Dirt 3 coupon is still missing. That represents value that you can resell if you do not play the game.

I've been thinking and a lot of evidence would point towards this:

- Scan.co.uk only stock two Sapphire Cards (run a Sapphire product filter) so how would a 1GB (not sold there) sneak into my basket/order?
- I can see eight chips of RAM on the card and you yourself have said that a 1GB version is more likely to have 4 x 256 than 8 x 128.
- A 2GB sticker has been applied to the box by hand (presumably by hand).
- After going through the box again I read on a little leaflet-like piece of card that codes/rewards can be redeemed online.

This could mean that there is no 'real' coupon, but an online code redemption scheme. There are two ways to find out (that I can think of):

1. Activate my product at Sapphire.com.
2. Stick my card in a system and run GPU-Z

The problem with option 1 is that if I activate the card and it is a 1GB I have potentially registered a card to my name that will no longer belong to me when/IF I return it!

The obvious problem with 2 is that I do not have a computer that is PCI-E compatible, I also can't think of anyone who would let me use theirs to check my card's identity.

I now think that it's more likely than not to be a 2GB Dirt 3 card with different packaging, however the question is what do I do now?

- Risk registering a card that will be returned?
- Wait until I start assembling my PC next weekend and risk finding out I have a 1GB variant when it is too late to exchange it before half-term?
- Contact Sapphire and see if they can shed some much needed light on the situation (won't hear from Scan until Monday, apparently)?
- Go ahead with an exchange with Scan just in case and hope that it will arrive before or on Saturday?

Thanks everyone for your help.

So, you have googled those numbers on those little white stickers on back of the PCB and none returns the model number? If you can post some closeup pictures of those stickers, perhaps I can help and see if I can come up with something.

Anyway, I agree with your analysis above. It also seems to me that the card is indeed a 2GB model.

I suppose all these boil down to how urgent you need to use the card.

Okay, thank you for the continued help (+rep) and I'll post some pictures tomorrow, might have to break out my 'proper' camera, I doubt my phone will suffice for the close ups. As it stands I'll keep hold of the card until installation, if it's not a Dirt 3 I'll find out and request an exchange/refund with Scan. I'll tell them this in an E-mail if I get a reply back from them, also do you think it would be helpful to link them this thread in any future E-mail?

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

It is important to make Scan aware of this matter as early as possible. Since you have aleady emailed them about this matter, I think you are in a safe position.

The fact is: you have paid the money and a card was sent to you. The invoice is the important piece of document of this transcation. It shows the amount which you paid and that corresponds to a 2GB version. The invoice should also contain the serial number of the card sent. All these should be sufficient for you to pursue this matter further with Scan, if and when necessary.

The serial number on the slip is: 11188-05-20G. Google that and....
1st result (biggrin.gif)
2nd result (looks familiar...)
[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-11188-05-20G-HD6950-Special-Graphics/dp/B005G50EOQ"]3rd result (completely wrong)[/ame]

4th result

There is a sticker on the back of my PCB that has SKU# 11188-05 printed onto it (no '-20G').

If you Google this it shows mixed results between 11188-05-20G & 11188-05-50G serial numbers. I suppose the obvious question is what’s the difference?

Went to Sapphire's website for an answer, their search provided none. So I switched to a custom Google search, much better.

From the first document opened it would seem that an SKU number 11188-05 (without a 20G or 50G) is still a Dirt 3 Edition.
I can't believe I've only just found this number and I'm sorry if I've wasted your time. I think now I'll keep the card, build my system and register my card at Sapphire.com and see if I get my game code.

I can't upload a picture because my camera isn't charged (!) but the sticker also says across the top: HD6950 2G GDDR5 PCI-E DL-DVI-I+SL-DVI-D/HDMI/DP W/DUAL FAN & BIOS (still no mention of Dirt 3 but there you go...)

NOTE: I also found this. Could this mean that the '20G' version has a dual fan but no Dirt 3 coupon? (Like in link 2 at the very top)

That’s all I could find from the numbers, will update when Scan E-mail.
