Wider heat sink fin gap = better cooling?

I was thinking of cutting off some fins on my V8 to increase airflow, but will it help in temperature drop?

I'd doubt it...if less fins were better wouldn't CM have made it with less? More surface area = more area for heat dissipation...you might get less dust build up though

No. More airflow would not be offset by the lower surface area. If your fins are very tightly packed get a fan with a higher static pressure to increase airflow.

basically the idea of thin/wider space fins is:

wider space between fins=you need low RPM fans or fan less/passive cooling
thin space between fins=larger surface area, better cooling with higher RPM fans (more static pressure)

for example thermalright HR02 (passive)
thermalright venomous x (higher static pressure)
