Advice on upgrade now that Bulldozer is a fail...

Thread Starter
I need to up grade my sig but now that Buldozer has failed I'm undecided on what to do. I'm not a heavy gamer but I do game. Also do video encoding. I do intend on overclocking. I've been with amd for years. How would you upgrade this rig while waiting for amd to get things lined out?

1. Not a heavy gamer
2. Video Encoding
3. AMD'er for years
4. Overclocker

Honestly, as an Intel Fanboy, I think that Bulldozer MIGHT just MAYBE be a good option for you. The FX-8150 supposedly shines the most in massively threaded benchmarks, which is very similar to video encoding. And if you plan on gaming only occasionally, the FX-8150 is not going to bottleneck you in any meaningful way. (Yes, if you play at 640x480 and you want 1000+ FPS.... )

Oh, and Bulldozer overlocks like a mother.

I think it's a toss up between the i7-2600k and the FX-8150.

AMD is not going to get lined out; this is the end of the AMD mainstream processsor. They need to focus on their other options, their APU, and their desktop video line. If you only slightly game and want to overclock, stick with an i5 and a cheap Z68 motherboard. It's inexpensive, performs well, and should have a long lifespan.

Can you give me the upcoming winning lottery numbers?

Actually this. (repped BTW)
Despite 1st gen Bulldozer not being as exceptional as we were led to believe, it definitely DOES really shine at things like encoding. Your real options are: 2600k, FX-8150, or wait for SB-e next year.
The 2600k will do better in some games, the Bulldozer will do the rendering/encoding slightly better. Just don't put Bulldozer on the Crosshair V...

amd bulldozer is fine in multithreaded tasks but you could just go with Intel and get a 2600K.

Definitely grab a FX-8120 and a quality Gigabyte board like the UD3. Don't listen to all of the negative hype. This CPU's performance will only get better and better as software becomes more and more parallel.

Personally I'm waiting on the next stepping, the xx70's, but I'll be upgrading other things in the mean time like power supply, cooling, and memory.

Agreed, I'm currently running tests on my FX-8120 set up which uses the UD3 mobo.

My Thread Link

I just beat the 2500K in Cinebench at similar clock speeds, currently I'm sitting at 4.7GHz fairly stable @ 1.456V. If you don't want to change voltages I was able to hit 4GHz before upping any voltages. Oh and I did a quick scan in MSE in under 1 minute, scanned about 77,000 files.

Well in all honesty, I would have to ask what your budget is before I can say for sure what I would suggest? Would you prefer to stay AMD? Is power consumption an issue you are worried about?
