Bent a cap on my mobo, almost gave myself a heartattack

Thread Starter
So I was installing my Archon and had the bright idea to use a pair of pliers to tighten the nuts that mount the back plate. I wasnt tightening them down a lot just a quarter of a turn after hand tightening. But sure enough as I tightened one down there was a cap close to it I didnt notice and as I turned the pliers it pushed the cap over to where it was at like a 30-35 degree angle. My heart almost stopped. I inspected the cap and it appeared its connection to the mobo was still there. So I was like all I can do is finish what I was doing and see if it powers up when Im done. Im typing this now on that pc so it seems to be working.

Anyone ever done this before?

Even though my machine is working could it still be effecting performance somehow?

Im scared.

I think I have.I once forgot to take off a plastic cover the cpu comes in.

It shouldn't effect the performance at all.

Shouldn't affect performance at all... in fact, so long as the contacts are still connected to the motherboard you shouldn't notice any difference what so ever.

You should be fine. I once bent a cap on a graphics card and it didn't affect anything. As long as it is still connected to the motherboard, its no worries. You could even _carefully_ try to bend it back, but you shouldn't even have to do that.

As long as it is just bent and you didn't break 1 of the leads or anything it will be fine. Just a bit crooked.

Haha, as long as its working leave it be for now, bending it back might just cause the cap to break off, then you'll be sitting there with a hot solder gun resoldering the cap back on lol* I learn this lesson the hard way =[

I have an old IBM P4 mobo I used to use that has a few old electrolytic caps right between the ram slots and the 40 pin connector with some extra long leads. So many times I've come close to possibly ruining that old board D: It's currently sitting at an angle towards the ram slots because I'm too nervous to straighten it

As long as the legs on the capacitor are not broken (or if it's a surface mount device it hasn't pulled away from the pad) you should be fine. Check the can isn't damage, some are oil filled so there could be a chance of it leaking and failure in the future as well as other possible faults.

It should be fine...
I'm pretty sure it's actually possible for you to put new capacitors in.

There are only like what 2 connections on it? As long as those are both connected it shouldn't cause any problems. (like everyone else said)

I've bent tons of caps, it just happens really.

So long as the connections are still intact, you should be ok
