why dont you just get a super cheap video card for the time being

5770 or a gts 450 or something...

Although I do understand that intels integrated graphics are getting more bearable

The P8Z68 V supports SLI and Xfire. There are a few cheaper ASUS boards that only support crossfire, but that isn't one of them. I would would check out the ASRock boards though. You can get an ASRock board with the same features and quality of the P8Z68 V for $30 cheaper.

from the specs of each motherboard, the only difference seems to be fire wire

i dont need firewire, so i'll probably just get the asrock

well, these cost 100 € here, i'd rather just wait a few weeks and see how the 7950 does
but as i said, i do not need a gpu now, i won't be playing any time soon yet
