Q6600 Overclocking help

Thread Starter
Hi! I apologize for the massive wall of text in advance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been reading over various posts for overclocking my Q6600, and have tried numerous different things, but I'm unable to get it stable. Now, The highest I've gotten is 3.2 GHz (400 FSB x 8 Multiplier), and ran a Small FFTs Prime95 for 9 and a half hours, and everything checked out there without errors or warnings.

I've been playing some games (mainly Diablo 3 Beta), and noticed stuttering, and my video card drivers crashing, getting the "This driver has recovered.." error. Now at first, I though it was just Diablo 3, since it's still in beta. I fired up a couple of other games (LoL, WoW, SC2, BF3), and got the stuttering, but not the video card crashes. I noticed in MSI Afterburner the GPU usage firing up to 100% when the issue occurs.

So, I started with the basic video troubleshooting. Did a clean wipe of my drivers, and reinstalled them, without any results. Even went out and picked up an EVGA GTX 570 and threw it in to make sure it wasn't my video card, cleaned out the drivers again and reinstalled, stuttering still there. Did all of the other basic troubleshooting I can think of (Basic PC maintenance, check for memory errors, defrag, etc etc.) and found myself scratching my head without any results.

So, I sat and asked myself.. "What changed from the time I started having this issue?" Then, a light bulb went off. Before I started having this issue, I was only overclocked to 3 GHz (335 FSB x 9 multiplier) before moving up to 3.2. I've been overclocked to 3 GHz for about a year without any issues. So, I dropped my OC back down and viola, no more stuttering in any of my games.

Which leads to me here now. Is it possible that my OC had anything to do with my video issue, or am I just imagining things? It leads me to believe so since when I reversed my OC back to what I had it, the video issue seemed to disappear. I eventually want to try and OC to 3.6 GHz to prevent any bottlenecks. I've been reading some other Q6600 posts on here, and from my understanding, the Q6600 is still a good CPU for at least a little while. I don't have the money to do much upgrading so I want to try and squeeze some more life out of my Q6600. Sadly, I had to return the GTX 570 because I only grabbed one for testing purposes. tongue.gif

I've been over a lot of posts, and looked at several settings. I understand the basics of overclocking, but my problem is with my board. All of the stuff I have read to do with OCing the Q6600, but nothing on the board I have. Granted, I know a lot of the settings are universal, or just have a different name, but I'm still unsure about doing it safely myself without a little bit of guidance.

The board I want to do this with is in my sig. I took some screenshots of my 3.2 GHz settings (just as I was waking up and finishing the Prime 95 testing), to provide all of the information needed to help with my endeavor.

When I was playing with my BIOS settings, my voltage won't go over 1.5. If there's any setting that allows me to somehow bypass that, let me know. Also, I realize that air cooling may not work efficiently, and will possibly pick up a Corsair H50 to keep the CPU cool, as well as a SSD once I get a stable OC.

Thanks again in advance to anyone that can help! smile.gif

Hi Maxanna, try out some of these BIOS settings to see if they help and definately enable Load Line Calibration.

Disabled DRAM Static Read Control.
Disabled DRAM Read Training.
Enabled MEM OC Charger.
Enabled Load-line Calibration. Helps control vdroop.
Disabled CPU Spread Spectrum.
Disabled PCIE Spread Spectrum.
Performance for CPU Margin Enhancement.
AUTO AI Clock Twister (Otherwise, pick one from list such as Light)

AUTO AI Transaction Booster
(Otherwise, choose Manual, set Common Performance Level with a lower number, Enabled all pull-in phases.)
Disabled C1E Support, and C-State Tech. (Power saving features; Enable C1E if
it's better for stability)
Disabled SpeedStep Tech. (Yet another power saving feature; Enable it if it's
better for stability)

Another thing to note is that these ASUS boards are really picky with 8gb of ram. Try 4 gb to see if you get any better results.
These chips need a lot of voltage, but don't worry about going over 1.5v, it's not recomended to be at that voltage for 24/7 usage.

I apologize. I totally forgot that my Dominator RAM died about a year ago, and when I went to replace it, it was no longer being manufactured. I replaced it with Corsair XMS2 8GB (4x2GB) PC800 DDR 2 RAM. The specifications on it are 1.8V, DDR2 800, 5-5-5-18 timings. Also updated it in my sig below.

I'll give this a shot tonight. I went out and put in a Antec 620 with a Push/Pull config today. (place was out of H60's, and this was comparable). Sitting idle right now at 20C, so hoping for some good results. Wish me luck! smile.gif

R.D. Bid -

I tried those settings, and BSOD'd at Windows login. Are there any other voltages I should adjust besides the CPU? Also, what is a safe voltage to start with on the CPU? I tried FSB 400 with a 9 multiplier (3.6GHz). Tried it with 4GB of RAM as well, no go.

Ok, you may want to play around with raising your CPU voltage (try 1.475)
FSB Termination Voltage as well as your NB voltage. Increase those step by step.

What are your current settings? FSB & Multiplier & core voltage.

This chip needs a ton of voltage to get it to run, and sometimes you just hit a wall. My Q6600 is fine all day long at 3.6, but once I try to get 3.7 there isn't any voodoo magic that will make it pass a stress test.

Currently CPU voltage is at 1.45 with 335 FSB x 9 multiplier. (3 GHz)

One thing I did notice when running Prime95 after setting it back to those settings, is in CPU-Z the voltage occasionally hits 1.456, even though I have it set to 1.450. Is this significant in any way? I just ran a Prime95 for 4 and a half hours while I napped, and tested just fine without errors or warnings. 1.45 to me seems a little high to me for just 3 GHz, just from reading other Q6600 overclocks.

Going to try increasing those other voltages, and check back in with the results.

UPDATE :

Got into Windows without BSODing, and Prime 95 is running Small FFT's as I'm posting this for about 20 minutes now. Bumped up the CPU voltage to 1.475, the FSB Termination, and NB a notch like you suggested. I forgot the actual values, but will post those once Prime has done it's thing for at least a couple of hours. Will also post all settings and a final result later. Looks promising so far. Max temps stopping at 52C. Will post a followup, then throw in my SSD I picked up today biggrin.gif Thanks for all of your help.

Well, so far so good. No errors or warnings on 2 hours of Small FFT's in Prime.

Including the settings recommended, here's what I ended up with.

Disabled DRAM Static Read Control
Disabled DRAM Read Training
Enabled MEM OC Charger
Enabled Load-line Calibration
Disabled CPU Spread Spectrum
Disabled PCIE Spread Spectrum
Performance for CPU Margin Enhancement
AUTO AI Clock Twister
AUTO AI Transaction Booster
Disabled C1E Support
Disabled SpeedStep Tech

FSB 400, multiplier of 9
RAM 1.8v @ 5-5-5-18
CPU Voltage - 1.475
FSB Termination - 1.30
NB Voltage - 1.20

Max load temp of 56C

I'm thinking I could go higher, but I'll stop for now. Possibly run some longer Prime testing, and some other tests. If anything changes, I'll post something here. Again, thanks for the help! biggrin.gif

Now to venture into the world of SSD tongue.gif

UPDATE : Still having the video issues described earlier in the thread on any CPU OC above 3.0GHz. Dropped my settings back down until I can figure out the problem.

Created a thread here if anyone can help : http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/1143674-cpu-overclock-causing-graphics-issues.html
