Going from 1GB 460s to a 3GB 580. Worth it?

I have 2 MSI 460 Hawks and im contemplateing upgrading to a MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme. I understand that 460s will wreck a single 580 but 975Mhz was the highest i could get on my 460s, If i overclock the Lightning Xtreme would it still be slower then the 460s? I plan to end up getting two 580s just one for now.

I'm mainly concerned about my Vram. BF3 showed me that more and more games are now starting to use more then 1GB of ram, and i didnt like it lol . I want to be fully prepared for Skyrym, Batman AC, and any other future game. I may try out 3D Vision gaming but i haven't looked into it at all yet.

I have 2 monitors.
1920 x 1080 120Hz
1280 x 1024 60Hz

MSI 460 Hawk SLI
Core Clock: 975
Shader Clock: 1950
Memory Clock: 2000

Also... Its to my understanding that a waterblock has not be released yet for the Xtreme would i be better off getting a ref 3GB 580 and putting it under water? or should i expect better overclocks on Xtreme on air?

You dont need the 3GB for a 1080p screen, since you wont be playing on the smaller screen will you?

Well, I just bought another GTX 460 and I'm happy with it so I wont be upgrading to something else for now.

But I think a 3gb GTX 580 will not give you that much better performance, at least not for that price!

Keep your GTX 460's for now and wait for kepler id say.

If you wanted better performance and more vram for 1080p I would have picked up 2x2nd hand 480's. They go for so cheap and will kick one 580 card or 2 460's. Unless you're planning to get 3 monitors or switch to higher res monitors then 1.5gb will do very well. If you really want to future proof then sure get 3gb, but to be honest unless you get a 2nd card it's going to be a bit of a waste

No i wont be playing on the smaller screen. I'm kind of now think maybe get 2x 580 1.5GB and put them on water, then sell them once keplar comes out . There are a ton of new releases coming out that i plan to play but don't really want to wait 6 months or however long it is for keplar to come out.

The 460s should be equal to or a bit faster than a 580. While 1gb of vRAM is on the lower side, it should be fine for most games on a 1080p screen. Keep the 460s, upgrade to kepler or the 7xxx series when they come out.
If Kepler comes out within the next 6 months just wait if it comes out in a year upgrade. The 580 is a great choice but not the 3GB edition for only 1080P. Just stick with 1.5GBs. Or if you want to save a bit of cash then just get a 570 .

The 3gb edition will actually be slower than the 1.5 from what ive heard unless you are using its ram its not worth it, secondly the 580 smokes a single 460 (idk about 2 though i only had 1) so id say trade in for 1 580 then get a second one now/later the extra 500mb of vram will probably help a tad bit in some of the newer games

That's what I think I'm goin to end up doing. I'm just worried future game may go over 1.5GB of VRAM.
Any suggestions on a 1.5GB 580? Im still going to be looking around for a few days but I suggestion would get me started

I think I'm going to put them on water.
