Help me decide which fans to get

Thread Starter
Hello, new to the forums, so I'll jump right into it.

Case: NZXT H2

Current fans:
Stock 120 mm NZXT fans x2 at front
Stock 120 mm NZXT fans at back
Stock fans with Noctua NH-D14

I have one empty slot for a 120 (140) mm fan and one for a 140 mm fan.
I am also considering to add a third fan to my NH-D14 as well as changing the cooler (reference) for my XFX 6970.

Questions:

1) Which 140 mm fan should I get? I've been looking at Noctua's NF-P14, any other suggestions?
2) Apparently the NF-P14 fits in the bottom 120 mm slot, so I guess I'll use the same fan there as the answer for 1) (unless a 120 mm does a better cooling job?).
3) According to others with the H2, they've gotten better temps and sound levels when they've traded their front stock fans to other fans. Question here: what's better, Noctua's NF-P12 or Scythe's Gentle Typhoon? I know the GTs are good with heatsinks, but what about sucking air into a case?
4) Like I said, I have the stock fans with the NH-D14, do you think I will have any benefit from changing the NF-P12 there to, say, a GT?
5) I read a thread about adding a third fan to a NH-D14, http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=357131, do you think it's worth it?
6) What do you guys think about changing my reference cooler on my 6970 to an Accelero XTREME Plus II? Can you recommend a better cooler?

I know it's hard to say that one fan is better than another, but considering I'll add five of the fans to a fan controller, I'll go for the one with superior cooling.

Thanks in advance!

For pushing a cone of air deep into the case check out silverstones' AP series.
Yate Loons are inexpensive and quiet (excellent for use with radiators).
I have several Cooler MAster fans: sickleflow is great, but have it on a fan controller, the 1100 rpm fans (that come in their cases ) work well.

It seems with most fans that once the rpm gets above 1200 rpm they get noisy.

I third the TY140, its a great fan, specially with new mobo that come with PWM fan controls, the only downside its mounting holes are of a 120mm fan, while the noctua can be mounted in both 120/140. Now if you are looking for standard 140mm fans look into Scythe Kama Flex and Noiseblockers PK series, really good fans.

Just be careful as the Noctuas 140 has 120mm mounting holes but still is a 140mm fan so if the fans are stacked it will not fit, im not familiar with your case btw.

GT are good case fans also, i use 5 in Antec 1200 and they do a great job. I prefer GT over noctuas, but that just my opinion both are great fans.

There are GT that can go to 5400rpms, so yea there are some that will net you better cooling but at the expense of noise. Imo the noctua fans that come with it are good enough, personally i wouldnt change them.

Really depends on the case also, but i feel its just going to net you very little gain, but an extra fan isnt that expensive to try it yourself, so if you are really curious give a shot.

On my Galaxy GTX580 the Accelero Xtreme Plus is incredible, i have it at 30% and it the card idles at 30C, on load at 50% fan speed, it has stayed below 75C. Not sure how it will perform on a 6970, but the cooler is good.

It seems somewhat herectical due to the large number of people who think the Noctua fans are good, but quite honestly, I think they are crap and over priced. So much so that I have a few lying around unused. There are better fans

I read somewhere in the Hardware News Section that NZXT uses proprietary fan mount sizes. For instance, the mounts are close to 120mm but not quite. I'm not positive about this, but if I was about to buy fans I would double check.
