Help me pick out a new laptop

Thread Starter
My previous Samsung R780 was getting a little dated, and the screen was starting to go, so instead of dealing with replacing I'm looking to grab myself a new one. As per the sticky:

What is your maximum budget?

Maximum of 1,700$ after tax.

What country are you in?

Canada. More specifically, Ottawa, Ontario.

What will be the uses of this laptop?

Desktop replacement and gaming. I recognize that desktops are, generally speaking, more cost effective. Unfortunately, I move around a fair bit, so I'm not prepared to invest in a computer I can only use a half or a third of the time. I'm not interested in spending extra money for more portability - bigger is better, I really don't care, since I'll rarely be using it without a plug nearby. When I need super-portable equipment I have a tablet.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?

Not really; I prefer the "higher end" lines - Intel, NVIDIA, etc. - but I'm not a zealot.

What screen size do you require?

I'm leaning towards 17.3"

What screen resolution do you require?

I don't "require" 1920x1080 but it would be nice. I'm alright with 1600x900, but don't really want to go lower.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?

I would prefer to go new, yes.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)

Basically a non-issue as far as I am concerned - see above.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?

I play all kinds; Starcraft 2, etc. I'm going to be buying Skyrim on release. The higher, the better, basically. Ultra is nice; High is all I really need though.

What operating system do you need? (if any)

Windows whatever is fine.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)

No.

How much hard drive space do you need?

External hard drives are nice. Not very much. 500GB is plenty and I rarely see anything lower.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)

Nope, but the bells and whistles are nice, obviously.

Is there anything else we need to know?

I'm very seriously considering the ASUS G74SX-XR1. Just checking the waters before I sink the money.

You really couldn't go wrong with the G74, Asus makes some very nice quality laptops. My bro has the G73 and its a beast! And the design is just superb. I can only imagine what the G74 would be like. Other than Asus you might want to check out what Sager has. http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.p...el_name=NP8170

After some thought, I decided to stick with the Asus. Thanks for the input!
