Nintendo 64 emulator on Ubuntu problems

Thread Starter
I've got an HP Pavilion G4 laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm trying to run an N64 emulator on it and play some Zelda on it.

I've tried Mupen64Plus, and it gets horrid performance, like 1FPS or .5FPS and no sound. At 640x480

I also tried Project64 1.6 on Wine, and seems to run fine (according to the audio) in windowed mode, but no video unless in full screen...where it drops to the same level of performance and Mupen

What emulator should I be using? Or is it because of the lack of the seperation between the GPU and CPU?

AMD A6 3400M @ 1.4Ghz
Elpida 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 (forget the timings, but they suck)
Radeon HD 6250
Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit (was having problems with 64)

thanks

could be that the 10.04 kernel doesn't officially support amd's apu and their drivers.

The above may be true or the fact that ATi/AMD GPUs don't have the greatest drivers on Linux. Usually that's the case - there are some exceptions, some drivers are particularly well-written. Have you tried installing the proprietary AMD catalyst drivers for Linux?

Additionally, try updating your kernel and other things with update manager, or by running:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

from the terminal.

thanks, I'll try that tomorrow, and yea i think you guys are right. I did some googling and managed to get my hands on some .dll's as plugins for project 64. I got video working, but CPU usage goes instantly to 100% and I only get 2 frames, my suspicion is that it is rendering all the video on the CPU as opposed to the GPU

K, I was getting really frustrated with trying to install a program I need for school, it wasn't working in wine, and windows wouldn't install due to no DVD drive drivers (apparently that's a thing)

So i tried updating the drivers in ubuntu, it also updated the GPU drivers, so now I got a nice boost in performance. Battery life went from 2hours to 5hours+ and it now runs project64 smoothly (at 800mhz CPU speed instead of the 1.4Ghz before) however the graphic plugin renders the video horribly.

What emulator do you guys recommend?
