Crossfire pros please help me understand!!

Thread Starter
ok so up until today i have been told running sli / crossfire setup on mother boards that support 8/8 was the way to go and the motherboard with 16x/4x will hold back your second gpu from performance to its fullest.

is this correct?

my situation is this, i have crossfire 6970's on a 16x / 4x mobo so i assumed i was being held back cuz of the 4x rail.

but my graphical result from 3d mark comparing it to other people with crosffire 6970's on 8x/8x mobo's are showing similar results most times being LOWER then mine.

Both my cards are oc'd as well.. 950/1450 in CCC for both cards.

so I was planning to get a new mobo to run 8x/8x but now after seeing results from others I am thinking it really doesn't do nothing as the 4x rail must be enough to run the second card at 100%

what do you guys think?

will i see a difference in performance by switching to a mobo with 8/8 slows or not?

I would play some games first to see how both cards perform before buying another mobo.

I'd be interested in seeing what in game is like. Run fraps with crossfire turned off, and then again with it turned on. I have heard of people getting negative returns on a crossfired card in your situation.

This is old, but it still shows the same results.

Nvidia seems to have a worse time running at 4x than ATI.

If you're going to upgrade, might as well make it x16/x16

iirc, it's only a 2-3% drop in performance when you go to x8, and 6% or so at x4.

Read this review before you make any decisions.

You should be fine IMO.

yeah i am switching up mobo then i am buying a new cpu aswell.

right now running a i5 760 @ 4.2

i guess i would go for the i7 2600k or i5 2500k with a new mobo.

but i just don't think spending the extra 300-450.00 more would show its worth for gaming over my current setup.
Depends if you NEED that extra 5-10% fps to make your game playable, if your already maxing out your monitors refresh rate, then its not worth the money.

I had 5850's in 16x/4x before my current set up, I should have kept it and saved myself a few thousand NZD. But if your dying to upgrade, get a 2500k and a decent motherboard that supports 16x/16x

With i5 2500k you not gonna notice a very big performance difference compare to your i5 760...
keep your cpu for now for sure, about your board you will notice some improvement only with 16x16PCIe, the rest it's just very little details.

The difference will be negligible. However, as was mentioned earlier, if you're already maxing your monitors refresh, don't bother getting a new board. You're not going to notice any difference.

so basically i am stuck in terms of upgrading at this point unless it is to do a full sorta of rebuild with new mobo cpu and maybe a third 6970 other wise nothing i really do is going to get me any more gains.

I guess i should be happy with what i got
