I have a chance to pick one up for $40, but here's the catch, its broken.

aaaaand the warranty has been out for about 2 years,so my question is...

is there any way I can purchase a new warranty even though the old one has run out?

Warranty, no. But you might be able to get it fixed depending on what's wrong.

I can't believe any company ever offering extended warranty after the purchase and after the warranty has run out. That's quite bad business strategy there.

However, depending on the type of issue the monitor has, it might just be worth it to buy it for the lowly $40. There are some things that are fixable.

If the issue is somehow powering on related or the screen has some odd hard flickering issues, it might just be capacitors. http://www.overclock.net/monitors-di...t-monitor.html - this is something you could try fixing.

Also, you might have it fixed at some professional for far cheaper than such a display would ever cost new.

Anything anyone on here tells you about what is wrong with it would be purely speculation. If you can post any details from the original owner about how/what went wrong with it we might be able to offer a more educated opinion on how much it would cost to repair.

Also correct me if I am wrong but didn't the Dell UltraSharp U3011 release last year? If so, how can the factory warranty have been invalid for 2 years already?

Pretty sure at dell you have 30 days from the expiration of the warranty to renew it for a longer length. After that you won't be able to.

Can you describe the problem the monitor has in more detail?

I would still grab it if you don't mind taking a small fix. A $40 monitor that can turn into a $1000 monitor... sign me up!
