time to make the switch. AMD did you no favors with the bulldozer debacle. I was all AMD forever, I made the switch and I'm not sure if I could go back.

I suggest waiting to see what actually happens with Bulldozer. There are so many rumors going around that no one actually knows whats going to happen. Some rumors are showing Bulldozer having 20-40% performance increases with OS tweaks. If your in no rush and Bulldozer does end up being a flop I suggest waiting for Ivy Bridge.

I went from a 955 to a 2500k a few months back.

One thing I can say, I see no performance increase in everyday use.

Sure the 2500K will do 4.5 on air while the 955 would only go 3.8, but it doesn't even matter.

I would stay with the 955 and hold out until Ivy Bridge.

THANK YOU! Yes it is alot better but it isn't worth the money unless you're severely bottlenecked.

Wait for now and make a more educated decision down the road.

mmm thanks for this; I've been thinking about this topic for a while and I think I'll just grab a SSD and new GPU (a new pair of headphones is also possible if not buying a new PC hihihi) and just wait another year for a new CPU.

As n1helix mentioned, it really just depends on what you're doing, and whether or not it's something that will fully utilize the capabilities offered by an i5.

this.

@OP. If you arent doing benchmarking, OCing w/e, drop the money you WOULD have spent on a CPU and put it into/toward a SSD. THAT is where the "seat of the pants" upgrade feeling will come from.
