For a while now, I've been using MS Access to store stuff like software licences/product keys, but I'd prefer a more standard relational database that doesn't try so hard to hide its SQL underpinnings.

Unfortunately, full-blown databases like MySQL and Oracle aren't very portable - sure, you can export the data, but getting it into another PC is a time- and labor-intensive process compared to copying and pasting an mdb file. Also, they can't be backed up using normal backup methods.

So does anybody know of a good alternative to MS Access that retains the portability aspect but provides direct SQL access?
