Very poor Samsung F3 raid 1 performance

Been stalking this forum for w while, time to register and post for the first time

PLEASE - fast answer is needed since today is sunday, and I have some time to reinstall system if nessesary

Ok so I have three Samsung 1TB HD103SJ F3 drives. Two of them are made into Raid 1 with a system drive, one is for the data. The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 and the raid is controlled by the motherboard and set up in BIOS/ before booting, before installing system.

When I test single drive I get pretty good results:

But when I test the RAIDed ones it getts ugly:

Any idea why?
I am thinking about reinstalling my system now so I may fix it.. Anyhow..

This was my first attempt of using RAID so maybe I did something wrong..

The only thing that i can think of is based on the very erratic performance readings. And that is that your on-board controller may not be able to process the data from two simultaneous drives properly. This seems odd as in RAID1 it does not have to calculate parity bit or otherwise but it is possible.
Most on-board raid chipsets cannot properly utilize the increased read speed available from RAID 1. For any RAID application i always recommend a separate RAID card as if the motherboard fails the data isn't lost and cards with ROC (RAID on chip) have much greater performance over motherboard or software based RAIDs.

Hope this helps you.

Seems a bit strange since the motherboard is pretty new for the current time, Z68 etc..

I also have a seperate RAID controller conencted to PCI to be able to use old IDE hard drives, maybe this is cousing problems?

I dont want to buy RAID controller for SATA drives since I do not care THAT much about it, I just wanted to have a bit faster system drive etc..

PS. One more thing - happened just now: after upgrading bios the computer stays at "Loading operatins System.." for like 1/2 minutes even If I want to boot from CD.
This does not happen If i switch bios to not-raid or I take out the PCI IDE raid card and have the bios switched to raid..
So maybe the PCI card is making it hard somehow?

I am to reinstall system in like 10 mins and fighting what to do...
Maybe I will not use raid and try SRT later, but then again - I would not sleep good If for example it will mean that my motherboard is damaged or something

What's your stripe size? And what are you using the RAID1 drive(s) for? Is your OS on your raid array?

If your stripe size doesn't mesh with what the purpose of your RAID array is designed for (i.e., a smaller stripe size if you're using it for something like multiple small transfers--i.e. an OS drive) vs. a storage/program storage drive, where you'd want larger stripe files since you're accessing fewer but larger files, you might see drastic changes in performance.

I really dont know the answers. I have selected RAID in my motherboard bios, got all defaults at the config and installed the system.

The RAID was suppose to be system drive, with some pics and music and important files since RAID 1 is a nice way to have a copy
I have about 6TB on other drives besides that

I think I kniow the answer.
I have installed a system on one of the disks, not raided this time, and tested them seperatly.

Here is what came:

First drive:

Second drive:

Does that mean that the second drive is damaged? Keep in mind that the system is installed on this one, the second one, maybe this can change something..?

Looks like a bad 2nd drive. Are you running them on the Marvell or Intel ports? I'm running your same tests on my gf's computer which also has two Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB's in RAID 1, here it is.

Attachment 234203
There was a slight drop in performance near the end, but not nearly as bad as yours was.

P.S. How do you get your attachments to be sized up?

Why two?? I am using them on Intel ports since they are considered higher in boot hierarchy by default.

Form what I see from your screen my single drive, now, without raid ones, performs better then your raid ones.. ?

PS. I didnt attach pics I linked them.. Other then that nothing..

You won't see much of a difference between a single drive and two drives in RAID 1. All you get in RAID 1 is redundancy and slightly faster access times.

I tought that read speeds will be like 80% faster and write speed a bit lower..
But what I see is it is worse all the times..

Also - why do you say that both drives may be damaged and not the second one that I post the screens in my later post?

If I get no speed bump, which is what I was about, I prefer to wait a bit and get a SSD drive and use the SRT technology. I wont use RAID0 since I lost data to many times and I am afraid

Sorry, I just meant your 2nd drive, I was mixing up your screenshots.

On your second drive, your minimum read rates are dipping way too much. A slight dip or two happens occasionally, but not that often (just look at your first drive).

You'll get much more of a speed bump with RAID 1 than without RAID 1 just because of the quicker access times, and you do get slightly better multi-tasked reads. You just won't see the sequential read/write benefits in RAID 0 (which aren't important, anyway).

RMA the 2nd drive. Samsung is pretty good at RMA service.
