Digital coax vs analog

Thread Starter

Hello,

I am planning on paring a Sony MDR-7506 with an Asus Xonar ST. I know that the Xonar ST has a digital coax connection and I was wondering if I used a 3.5mm to digital coax cable would there be a noticeable quality difference than if I just used the standard 3.5mm connection?

Female to female adapter

Thanks!

Unfortunately that won't work. The Digital out is well... digital and uses data as in 1's and 0's. The headphones require an analogue output.

If you were looking for superior quality to your on board DAC (digital to analogue converter) then you would have to purchase a separate headphone amplifier with digital input. But given the quality of the sound card you are using i would say its a minimal difference so stick with on board headphone amp.

Chances are that your headphones have far more harmonic distortion then any modern high quality sound card so don't sweat it.

I second the don't sweat it and that what you're proposing won't work.

OP, if you look closely you should see that that RCA->3.5mm cable is mono only anyway....just like any single RCA cable by itself. Remember, a "digital coaxial cable" of reasonable quality is really no different than a single RCA-RCA cable.

Ok thanks very much for helping me out guys. I was wondering if it was going to be mono only and that would have been my next question and now it does make sense why it wont work.

Now I have another nooby question: It looks like I'm going to need a 3.5mm extension cable for about 12FT. I see some of them are gold plated (and more expensive); is getting the gold plated cable going to be worth it? I know with digital cables such as HDMI it really doesn't make a difference but I am unsure with analog audio cables. I'm just looking for the best possible quality without breaking the bank lol. Thanks!

For digital signals...especially things like HDMI for lengths over 2 meters, you can screw yourself with cheapo cables. HDMI is especially bad because the morons at HDMI did not put any error correction in the interface, resulting in snowflaking on 2meter+ cables until v1.3 or v1.4. Analog is less important. If it makes you feel better considering price...you can get both dirt cheap (as cables go) online.

Gold is for corrosion resistance. Gold has a lower level of conductivity than copper. It's a tradeoff--having gold plating would be raising the effective gauge of the cable.
