AD700's don't lack bass. The bass is just enough, sexy and tight. Not this loud overpowered, boomy, one-note, logitech-style bass.

Just my opinion after owning them for a while.

Forget about crappy 7.1/5.1 emulation over software. It screws with your music and using ALchemy + EAX in games has the same affect, without screwing with your music.

I also used to use the Crystalliser, but with the AD700's I don't see the need any more.

Hope this helps.

They lack bass vs. most closed back headphones.

Whether or not the AD700 lacks bass depends on your reference point. If your reference point is an Ultrasone PRO550, then heck yes, the AD700 lacks bass.

If you think it's just right, then by all means enjoy your headphones. I think the AD700 is completely unexciting.

Most headphones around the $150 don't require a headphone amplifier. What's your budget for this purchase?

You can run directly from the card but as with most if not all cans, they will sound better through an amp, and a good quality amp at that. I had my dad come over with some of his audio gear and we did a whole lot of testing and listening tests smile.gif

Yes, this is true. I noticed it coming from HD201's

They lack bass on your average computer sound setup, but when you listen to them through audiophile stuff with a great quality source and everything in between the source and the cans, they don't lack anything!! smile.gif

I'm not a basshead though. I don't listen to bassy music I guess.

My Sony MDR-V700DJs were pretty tight with respect to bass; lows were crisp and punchy. By comparison, the ATH-AD700s feel somewhat lacking, but I suppose balanced is a more fair term here. The Sonys are listing at Amazon for $90 right now, which I about what I paid five or six years ago.

RCA? The RCA is either for speakers or an amplifier. There's no reason to use the RCA output for the headphones.

i think the pic you saw was a picture of Ultrasones connected to a sound card using the 6.5 mm plug
the 6.5 mm plug is almost the size of RCA plug

here is a pic
443df555sn154885.jpg

it has 6.5/3.5 cords with 6.5 to 3.5 adapter

and its only 64 ohms , dont worry about amping
