How to protect my computer while folding?

Thread Starter
I am currently running ubuntu, to fold 6903 and 6904s, and I was wondering, in windows 7 i used coretemp to protect against pump breakage, like i would set if it went above 85c, the turn off, because a pump broke or something was wrong. How can i set something like that in ubuntu, or in bios or something, because i always have that fear, overnight something might break...
thanks

Guys, I have not tried this, but am also interested.

I shook the Google tree and this is what fell out:

This is a more official link to ubuntu doc that tells you how to get displays and alarms similar to what coretemp does:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SensorInstallHowto

This is a link to a "how-to" that seems to replicate what coretemp does (shuts the machine down at a predefined temperature):

Well, I think that, as with all things, I'd practice safe computing:
  • Stop your folding client. At least one reboot is required to implement.
  • I'd back up my current WU, regardless of which project it is. <Queue "Every WU Is Sacred", parody of a Monty Python song, in the background>
  • If you have anything else important running on this machine, back that up as well.
  • Put the mods in and TEST them. It looks like the script on the second one needs to be modified for the sensor output for your processor (the one listed is a two core processor.) I'd cause it to "trip" on each core you monitor just to make sure it works (by setting the cutoff temp to one you know it will hit under load, you can raise them later.) Make sure you do this test with a LOAD temp, that way you're not fighting the script at rest temps.
When you're satisfied with your setup start folding again.

Please note that there is overlap between the two pieces of functionality: both use and install lm-sensors. You won't have to do that part twice.

I'm not in a place where I can actually try these so I can't be too much more specific, but both procedures appear to be clear and complete.

I didn't try it, but i looked over the script here, and as long as lm-sensors is setup, and you run this script each time you start up (you will need to leave the terminal window open as it is running) or set it up as a boot up script, it should work, nothing malicious in the script, and it would be stupidly simply to adjust as it is just a bunch of if statements.
