Dual Xeon vs Single i7

Thread Starter
Ok, so I've been contracted to build a new computer for my class. The budget is about 20 000 kroner, or about 3600 dollars. The computer will run some virtual machines, a couple of web servers, ftp servers and so on, and probably quite a bit of Folding. Since this is a school class for nerds, it will also be used for 3D purposes, such as gaming .

I have the option of going for an EVGA Classified SR-2 motherboard and dual Xeon W3565, or a VERY decent motherboard (Asus P6T7 WS SuperComputer?) and an Intel Core i7 990 Extreme. Both options carry about the same price, and include an Nvidia GeForce GTX590, 16-24GB RAM, 1000-1200W PSU. As you can see, a competent computer. We will probably get Megahalems or other good CPU coolers.

Which option will...
  • Give the best virtualisation performance?
  • Give the best 3D performance?
  • Be best for servers?
  • Give the highest Folding PPD?
What's your call? Anyone got any suggestions for changes?

Additional Comment:

Given that some work units, such as the 6903, seem to be capable of bringing in 500 000 points for a single unit, it would seem sensible to get a computer that reports more than 12 cores and is therefore able to get this unit. Dual W3565 would, as I understand it, report 16 cores with Hyperthreading enabled. Am I right?

Hi,

I live in Belgium and in the University of Antwerp they build this:
http://fastra2.ua.ac.be/

Maybe you can use this setup as an example and "rebuild" it with todays hardware...

And if you are using a WS motherboard, it can handle more then 1 graphic card.
Use it with SLi bridge for gaming and without one for folding (after adding more GTX590's wink.gif)

Do what they did wink.gif

Well, as much as I would love adding another GTX590, I don't think the budget allows. The primary goal with this PC is virtual machines, so I can't cut back on virtualisation performance in order to get more PPD.

Go with the dual Xeon build. It will completely crush the 990. Don't go with the mega's. I'm not sure if they will even fit lol. You'd be fine with Hyper 212+s unless you plan on doing some big OCing.

PSU, I think that max you'd need is a 1000w if that.

Ram is dirt cheap get as much as you need. You need a minimum of 3 sticks per cpu.

Check the cost of two 580s vs the 590. If the 580s are cheaper together, go with those.

Xeons will always be best for server type situations.

HDDs get WD Black RE4's or some other enterprise level drives.

Another vote for SR-2. Mine is a beast and destroys about anything I can throw at it. Puts my 2600K and 920 builds to shame, as it would a 980x build as well.

Not in Norway. In fact, I have the entire setup saved at my school computer, at the total cost of, I believe, 17 000 kroner (3000 dollars). That includes 16GB RAM, GTX590, SR-2 and dual Xeon's. I can post it here tomorrow, when I get access to the aforementioned school computer.

Unfortunately, in Norway, those CPUs are twice the price of the W3565. I could ask the teacher, who is paying for this, but I don't think he would accept.
