CPU or GPU Upgrade? - Page 2

My apologies I never put my two cents in, My opinion would definitely have to be a better CPU. Perhaps a X4 955 or an X6 1090T?
5770 is good enough to handle some serious games but your Regor is not,
get a Phenom II and you'll be good for a some time, but your video card will start showing it's limitations.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I was thinking a phenom was the most likely move next. I appreciate all the helpful tips, and I'll be getting rivatuner downloaded pronto.

**Edit** I play a lot of MMO's, which are more CPU based if my brain recalls correctly...definitely thinking CPU/mobo upgrade. Pretty sure the 770de board i've got now doesn't do Phenoms (or anything newer).

I recently built a system for a friend using parts from the OCN market place

My friends stated use for this rig was SC2 and Diablo 3 when it gets released

I used an 890 chipped Asus board and a X4 955 with no OC paired with a GTX 465

SC2 can be a CPU demanding game at times, he gets no lag even when PSI usage is maxed out.
I suggest surfing the market place for a sweet deal on a 955, with Bulldozer coming out you mind find some good deals on a 955 or a 1090T then later get a second 5770

Just as a followup, did some testing using RivaTuner and GPU-Z for a couple of different comparisions. CPU tops out and GPU seems to max at about 78%....CPU it is!

Do you have this board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157226 ?

Or this board:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157176 ?

I'm assuming the later since your sig says DDR3 not DDR2 but just want to make sure...

Either way, both of those boards should support any Phenom II you want to put in there. However, I would advise against overclocking a quad or hexa 125W CPU due to the limited nature of the non-heatsunk 4+1 phase VRMs.

You might however, check into the 960T for use on that baord, which is a black edition thuban with 2 cores disabled, making it a 95W rated quad core.

-------------

Is your 4GB of RAM all on 1 stick, or are you running dual channel?

If you're on 1 stick, you might want to try adding another stick of equal specs to see if that doesn't improve performance.

-------------

What is your budget for an upgrade?

-------------

What is your budget for an upgrade?
1. It's the straight DE, not the DE+

2. Ram is 2 by 2, so dual channel

3. Budget is as follows (roughly);
a. $52 for 8gb (4 x 2) Ripjaws 1600 memory
b. ~$100-120 processor
c1. SSD for about 200 bucks, but this isn't a priority with this upgrade
c2. New mobo for ~$150

You mention not overclocking it due to a 125w PSU vs a 95w. The board itself is rated up to 140w, and the temps are fantastic right now on it. I get that the 4+1 isn't ideal, but I'd always thought it was temps that killed chips, not voltages...and I'd obviously be careful about not crisping my board. I'd upgrade the board if necessary to OC it; heck, that's half the fun.

http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.asp?Model=M3A770DE

If I did upgrade the mobo, I'd certainly not get the SSD, and spend ~$150 on a nice board for it. Was thinking the gigabyte UD3, so that if I upgraded again in a year or two, I'd have an AM3+ board for the job.

What temps are fantastic? CPU temps?

I realize the board is rated 140W, but you have to realize that published claims and real world capabilities often differ a lot. There are tons of 125W rated boards out there with massive beefy heatsunk 8+2 phase VRM configurations that can literally deliver well in excess of 200W of clean power to the CPU. There are also plenty of boards, like the one I own (3+1 phase no heat sinks), that claim 125W support, that would fry if actually operated at that power level for an extended period of time.

As it turns out, many boards have the ability to throttle back CPU power consumption in order to protect the VRMs. The result is less performance. This is where a lot of those claims of "125W" and "140W" come from on boards that really can't sustain these power levels.

Ok, I get what you're saying. Sounds to me like a new mobo that's rated to carry more volts (with 8 channels) is going to be desired for overclocking a new chip...I kinda figured as much.

One final question; in your opinion (and I understand this is a tough thing to judge) which would give better performance; the regor I've currently got OC'ed to 3.6, or a stock quad Phenom at 3? I'm looking at this from an FPS perspective for MMO gaming (I play Rift primarily if that helps in some way).

**did think of one other, off the wall question; I've heard, though not from credible sources, that an SSD helps with MMO gaming because there's more reading from disc involved with these types of games. Any truth to that?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate the OCN community!
