[egmnow] Valve Talks Up Source Engine 2 - Page 14

This. The Source Engine was made as an extraordinarily modular engine from the start so that they could just easily replace aging components as time went on. The difference between Source 2004 and Source 2011 is day and night.

Still, I wish they would put some serious effort into the third-party development end of the engine. Source SDK has been virtually unchanged since 2004 and Hammer is nearly identical to the one for HL1.

I could see either way. Source looks decent and it's good enough for me. As long as it's capable of making the games that they want to make without limiting them (gameplay-wise), fine by me. Graphics are nice, but not terribly important.

That said, Source is showing its age, graphically. Even with the updates. Portal works well on it because everything is clean and smooth and doesn't really need Crysis-like graphics to look good. But Episode 3 will probably look a little dated by the time it comes out, compared to what we are becoming accustomed to and what we will become accustomed to, as better-looking games roll out.

I'm fine with the current engine, it runs wonderfully and there's lots of things I like about it. But a new engine would be cool and I'd love to see what they could do, and better graphics are always nice. I'd be happy with whatever they do.

Valve will not make a new engine. Source is modular, upgrade all you want.

I hate when people make this argument to defend the Source engine. As if making a good game and making a pretty game are mutually exclusive.

I don't know where people get this idea that making a game that's good with a great storyline and depth means that it can't also be ground breaking in visuals. The first Half Life pulled both of these things off. It was the most visually advanced game of it's time and also had a great story. I don't see any reason why Valve is unable to do that again.

The Source engine is dated valveboys. You can't deny it. In fact, the BEST line you can come up with to defend the Source engine is that it looks "fine" or "good enough" while games like BF3 and Crysis look exceptional and set new standards for game fidelity.

Sure the Source engine might have evolved since it's first iteration, but so has every other engine and look where they stand now. The Unreal engine is capable of running on many different kinds of hardware and is able to give us great visual effects all while running at decent frame rates.

Yes, you can. If valve kept remaking DoD and kept using the same engine for many "new" releases then yes you can attack valve for pulling an EA. But they don't, they make all new games with which still look good (Portal 2) which older systems can run and enjoy.

Its also about expectations (for me at least), when i buy a EA game, I want bleeding edge graphics, and lets face it, some of their games failed to meet such a demand because they refused to move forward. When I buy a steam game, I expect it to be fun, entertaining, but not too graphics intensive though they have made some beautiful games.

Look at CDProject a small company on a tiny budget created the witcher 2, a game that had a great story, gameplay and offered stunning visuals. but valve fanboys say what valve is doing is enough. I honestly dont think valve cares about making games anymore, release the occasional game which is severely lacking quality and appeal compared to their old school titles just to make people happy. They are more content with steam revenue at this point.

people don't want this. it was forced on them with no other option. people have come to accept it.

high schoolers who play fps (lets be honest here CoD) on console all day every day want this so they can feel better than their friends & brag about their "rank" & "prestige".

most everybody else hates it.

the fact that I cant play around w/ all the guns that i paid for aggravates me, probably more than anything else in modern games; it's tied up there w/ DRM that breaks windows & stays installed when you uninstall a game bordering on a rootkit.

Your expectations are incredibly naive, as another poster said why can't games have good graphics and gameplay? I expect a good game overall and im not ashamed to say more EA games have appealed to me than your precious valve.

You just answered your own question, the highschoolers and such are the primarily demographic of fps games now, and they want this. If it makes you feel better BF3 will allow all unlocks on unranked servers.
