[egmnow] Valve Talks Up Source Engine 2 - Page 20

1. 5-7% of PC gamers, which are around 1/3rd of all gamers, can use Dx 11. Of those 5%-7%, probably less than half of them can run a game that takes full use of Dx 11. So of the entire PC/Console game buying public, Dx 11 users are about 1%. An extra couple million to appease the 1% is a bit much right now.

2. Many people are out of a job and could care less about upgrading their GPU. Game makers are having a tough enough time just selling games, let alone trying to require their customer base to upgrade to play said game.

3. When someone comes out with a wonderful graphics game ( Crysis, Metro 2033, Crysis 2 post patch ), the vast majority of the graphics they're attributing to a new Dx version is actually the product of Dx 9

4. Any dev that makes a new engine right now w/o figuring out what programming on the new consoles will be like is a tard. I'd imagine that $20-$50 million will be spent per engine making new engines for the next gen stuff. If they make something early for PC now and have to fix it later for Ps4/720, then it will be millions in future delays.

So yeah we're in a holding pattern right now. Be happy that your current purchases are lasting much longer than they should.
When people use this argument for consoles they are sent packing by forum goers, I guess its only a valve defense.

i don´t care if they use doom1 engine, just release more half life games, those games are great but way too short

they should be like EA releasing crap NFS games every year but minus the CRAP

Ah so logical arguments only work for valve? if the same argument is tried for consoles it automatically becomes illogical? great good to know.

I have about 8 gigs of ram just sitting there. And efficient engine would max out everything it has on hand.
Because there's too many XP users still, see: DX9.

I'm just shocked at the hypocrisy from some people.
Read the topic.

They update the engine.

It depends who you are talking about. I have never read FunkDr railing against consoles.

Did you hear people calling Starcraft 2 a consolized game because it was a DX9 game released in 2010 when DX11 was out?

What are the visual advantages of DX11? Tessellation and depth of field. Visually, everything else is similar. Under-the-hood, there are some changes on how developers code. Is that relevant for the gamer? Not really.

Current graphics card do not have the performance required to run Heaven levels of tessellation in actual games. Performance in canned demos will be much better than actual games too. If you want to run Crysis 2 with tesellation, you basically need 580 SLI. That is a very niche market.

The same logic would still crush consoles because their button mashing, QTEs, horrible controls, unskippable intros, eye gouging bloom and object popping doesn't occur in valve games.

Why talk up a game engine unless you have some big releases coming soon.....

They update the engine.
They update it, but realisticly they're are only so many bolt on's and add in's you can put in the engine before it starts to become inefficient. I'm fine with them not updating their engine as long as they stop charging $40-$50 for a game, when a lot of indie developers are matching/exceding the graphically fidelity and charging a lot less.
