[egmnow] Valve Talks Up Source Engine 2 - Page 26

Valve have their hardware surveys, they know exactly what they are doing and who they are aiming for. I much prefer a smooth game than some laggy eye candy.

Brutuz you showed me a character model and I showed you a better one and your complaint was a small detail like sun glasses. Yet the portal girls shirt is painted on while you actually see the detail in ghosts clothing.

Now the thing is we are comparing different art styles since source is mostly cartoon as I stayed before.

i've heard the "there's no reason to switch" many times before from the xp fanbois.
get real. the xp population is shrinking every month. windows 7 is now the de facto gamers' OS
I'll say this once and I'll say it again. EA is shooting themselves in the foot by making their game exclusive to high end systems and Windows 7. My system is fine for the games that I play by the way, I play games for the game play not the graphics. BF3's playerbase will be smaller than games such as CS:GO for this reason alone.

It seems a lot of OCN people do not understand that spending millions to target 15 percent of the market is not exactly good business. Not everyone is like OCN where you spend $1000 on new graphics cards just to play one benchmark.

There is a very good reason Valve gets a free pass.

The games actually play differently from one another. Unless you're suggesting L4D plays like CS:S which plays like Portal?

CoD games change very little in terms of gameplay AND graphics, and thats why they get ripped apart for their engine, because it is basically the same game you bought last year, etc. If they changed up their gameplay, people wouldn't mind the graphics, if they changed up their graphics, less people would comment on the gameplay.

On a side note, I'm regretting my choice of avatar now.

a 460 is worlds more powerful than a 5770 when it comes to Dx11 usage. A 460, last time i heard, is the same as a 5850 or better.

Being a 5850 owner, i know what the Dx 11 cutoff is at 1080p. Even with a healthy 900/1200 OC, Metro and Crysis 2 turn to a slideshow when at max, so how would a 5770 run it the same or better than a 5850? Answer is it wouldn't

Resolution is relevant to maxing out a game. EVERYONE can max out a game at 480p but not everyone can at the standard resoution of 1080p.

Gameplay and graphics are related to a Devs budget and total man hours they have available to the project. Focus on one and another will suffer. It is a balancing act. It's like the saying about cars ( fast, reliable and cheap ) exept it's 4 options.
Graphics, gameplay, cheap, reliable, pick 3:

Considering the amount of smart people here you'd figure they'd get it on their own.

as for the amplifier analogy, isn't it true? the part about "max wattage" is the same for both, disregarding frequency. so both amps are the same in terms of maximum output wattage.
Uh, no one cares if you can max out a game at 480p since you don't even need a GPU to do that. I don't set the standard, the buyers do.

Simply put, I'm using the standard resolution of game players.

And no, the amp analogy actually isn't true. It's easier to produce wattage at 1kHz than at the entire sound range of 20-20kHz, which is why you see cheapo amps and receivers quoting the same wattage as amps and receivers 3x-4x their price. Oh and the THD.

And another unfortunate thing is that this survey only depicts the monitors max resolution, not what the person uses to game. It would be nice if they showed what people used to game!

1920x1200 - 7.8%
1080p - 26%
720p - 17.8%
1280x1024 - 11%

Seems like most use 1080 or around it.

No they wont

The beta ran pretty well at low settings for computers that weren't as strong. If this was a thread about any other dev, people would be clamoring about how their game is a console port especially if they had no dx10 or 11 options

If thats the case nobody here on OCN should complain that consoles should be focused on rather than PC

BTW im not saying valve should upgrade their gfx engine, they can do whatever they want and im not particularly that big of a fan of their games to care anyways. Im just saying if this was any other game company; whether it be bethesda, activision etc; or if this thread was about consoles going strong for another 5 years people on this forum would be up in arms.

The only think that irks me about the Source engine is switching weapons...It's like you have four arms or something when you switch weapons. I love how if you watch someone switching weapons, another gun just magically appears in his hands. A very minor detail, and it's one that I can live with since I've played Source engine games for so long, but still kinda dumb. If they fix this somehow, then the Source engine can stick around until the Sun implodes for all I care.

I will give you the witcher 2 example again; great gameplay, great graphics (better than any valve game), budget of 6 million or so (way lower than any valve game). This game offered the whole package.
