[egmnow] Valve Talks Up Source Engine 2 - Page 27

Why, OH WHY do people still use this argument?!?! Gameplay and Graphics are completely separate from each other and I don't see why one needs to be sacrificed for the other.

Most of the posters who are arguing for Valve to update their source engine aren't complaining that Valve games are boring. They just look boring. Hell, if Valve all of a sudden decided to use the Unreal engine to make their games, I don't think they would magically become less fun, but they sure would look a lot better. So please, stop using your childhood love for Valve to hide the fact that the Source engine is dated and severely behind other well known engines that are just as efficient

For someone who likes to point out logic fallacies in other people's arguments, you sure like to use a few yourself. So because someone likes their games to be fun and look nice, all of a sudden they aren't "real" gamers? Nice appeal to an anonymous authority.

Again, developers who make good games don't always sacrifice gameplay for graphics. BC2, Oblivion, The Witcher, Half-Life 2 are just a few games that are fun to play and, at the time of their release, looked wonderful.

I understand Valve's focus is on gameplay and that the engine is placed on the back burner. But that doesn't mean that people can't call the Source engine out and identify it for what it is.

Thank you not only that but to compare it to COD which is completely different and still better is crazy.

Resolution is not relevant, and that's because not every monitor or television uses 1080p. A 1680x1050 native monitor maxes out at a resolution of 1680x1050, as does any other monitor and its native resolution.
As well, we weren't talking about maxing a game out, just having playable framerate with DX11 features. You're going beyond the point of, "Your 5770 can't do DX11" with, "Your Mid Range DX11 card can't play a game like Metro 2033 at 1080p+ maxed out, so it isn't a real DX11 card!!11!1"

Simply put, I'm using the standard resolution of game players.

1920x1200 - 7.8%
1080p - 26%
720p 1680x1050 - 17.8%
1280x1024 - 11%

Seems like most use 1080 or around it.
I'm hoping that was an error on your part. 1680x1050 is the second most popular resolution on the chart. Not only that, but there is a larger group under 1080p.

You're acting like Avalanche Studios hasn't already focused on this, already releasing their second game using the same Engine that created Just Cause 2, a game that didn't support windows XP or dx9. I wasn't talking about Battlefield 3 at all, but then James mentioned it and you tried to argue with me over what someone else said...

It its not broken, dont fix it.
Valve makes games that have great narrative and great gameplay.

I will never understand why beautiful graphics and a hot engine are anywhere close to those 2 things on anyones list.
...
Probably the same reason I cant stand Micheal Bay movies and didnt like Avatar.

Who said anything about fixing? Its about upgrading. That's like saying we should have stick to VHS because it was fine at the time instead of upgrading to DVDs :/

Did Portal 2 look exactly like HL2?

Texture wise? I would actually go to say it looked worse. Map size? Still pretty bad, with maybe one or two large areas with multiple tests that didn't force you to go through a loading menu. Actually, there were never loading menu's in Half-Life 2. You actually went through a smooth transition as the next map loaded giving you the feeling of being in a large world.
Of course the engine does allow for higher res textures, I'm just saying Portal 2 had some pretty bad textures when looking at them (Such as being right next to it, non-zoomed.) Lighting and animation were the only real differences (Oh, and 'better' particle effects.)
