I never said it was easy? And I seriously doubt it'd be worth it for them, considering the amount of work it'd be.

I think the reason Valve haven't needed to update their engine is because of the clever ways they make their games.

Take the Portal games for example. They don't need flashy graphics etc, they rely on physics, which work REALLY well on the Source engine.
Then there's the L4D series, games designed to look like an old B-Movie (filmgrain etc), plus with L4D it's the whole experience. Play a Versus match on a 10v10 server and I guarantee the last thing you will be saying is 'damn this engine looks old'!!

I must confess that I only just played Half Life 2, Ep 1+2 this year for the first time, and I only got round to playing them because of a review of the Cinematic Mod, and I have to say that I was actually quite impressed with the graphics on this mod considering the age of the games. (actually completed Ep2 today, got massively stuck on the strider battle!!!!!!)

The Source engine does exactly what it says on the tin!

Having said that, Frostbyte does it for me! B:BC2 - Standing inside a building that has just been hit with a rocket, hearing that creaking that only means one thing.... GET THE HELL OUT!!!, unforgettable!!!!!!

I will add that I think Valve needs to make a new source engine too but for completely different reasons. I think the difficulty in using the source engine is hamstringing their efforts at bringing out quality games faster. I think the length of time between their releases is partially due to how hard it is to program with source ( at least from what i've heard ).

Really good games - that takes time and skill - even with loads of money and people making a great game requires time and innovation, good ideas and well written story. These things can be rushed, but the outcome will never be as good. Valve know that waiting to make the best game possible is better than putting something out quickly - look at Portal 2, they completely scrapped their planned game, made something new when testers were disappointed. They had lots of ideas and carefully picked the best one.

Game development is a creative process, the best games will take time. Valve are still making games, and the money they make with steam and everything else they do will help them do that, but the last thing I'd want to see is Valve becoming another big name publisher pushing out boring games. They are already doing what they can - Valve have a lot of different franchises they are working on - having lots of money allows them to explore new ideas, and so more will come to fruition in a closer timespan as they complete.

As to steam robbing other publishers? Please. Steam takes a cut just like any brick and mortar store - they invested in making the platform and hosting it. They also provide steamworks, they provide advertising and visibility in the market, of course they should take a cut. As to robbing DICE/EA? Really? Yes, they invest in their games, and? Why should they sell it on Valve's platform without giving a cut to Valve?

As to the whole 'L4D2 could have been L4D1 DLC' - well, maybe, but that's true of many sequels. Valve didn't ask an excessive RRP, it was a good game with plenty of new content, and it was fun. Valve already do far more free or reasonably priced DLC than most companies, and haven't stooped to stopping mod tools to sell DLC.

tl;dr: Valve still make great games.
Where in my post did I ever say that valve needs to make a bunch of games every year...

Lord behold these games also had good game play

Do you not see how fail the argument of gorgeous games cant have good gameplay is?
I disagree with BF2 and CS. BF2 was definitely not one of the best looking games when it came out.

You're right though, I was clearly not thinking as I was tired

I still disagree though on the part that cutting edge graphics can also have cutting edge gameplay today. That's what I was actually trying to type out in my original post. There hasn't been a single game with good balanced gameplay that's came out recently.

Not really. They nailed team fortress 2 pretty well. Same with Portal 2. Portal 2 looks better than most games on the unreal engine nowadays. Forget about CoD too.

2. That Alyx pic I posted was from Episode 2 which came out in 2007 and MW2 came out in 2009. But remember what everyone said which they never change the engine so that means MW has the same graphics as MW2. Also MW came out in nov of 2007 aswell.

I never said Chell was in HL2, I was commenting on the posted pic of Alyx then you guys started talking about Chell and Portal. Did you post a previous pic of Chell then post a picture of Alyx?

This is what you posted

Brutuz you showed me a character model and I showed you a better one and your complaint was a small detail like sun glasses. Yet the portal girls shirt is painted on while you actually see the detail in ghosts clothing.

Now the thing is we are comparing different art styles since source is mostly cartoon as I stayed before.

And I said that, most of your complaint regarding Chells model in Portal 2 is purely art style, not actual graphical quality. (Which, if you measure in polygons and texture size would probably be in Chells favor if you stripped off all the gear on Ghost, or put the same gear on Chell.)

When was Chell ever posted... he posted a picture of Alyx, and a Picture a Ghost.

The only portal 2 related picture was the room Brutuz posted. Then you started talking about Chell's character model...

Poor excuse is poor, especially considering the MW2 guy (While having a semi-realistic facial area) has bad textures on his arms, and no doubt hasn't got one fifth of the animation quality of the average Source character.

What does this have to do with gfx? Im not saying valve games need better gfx, I am just calling them out on their gfx being obsolete which people seems so hesitant to do on this forum.

Also COD is a franchise, their not going to change the game; did SC change the core gameplay of SC2? does CS, CSS and CSGO have any gameplay changes at all? Even BF3 hasnt changed much from BF2. This is because old school fans of the franchise dont want significant changes as long as they add little things they are happy.

The people clamoring for cod to be like bf with vehicles, large maps etc would take away what cod is. Do you see people demanding tanks and large maps be implemented in counterstrike? I do agree cod has killed it with their yearly releases though.

btw I am not a cod fan, I never liked them even cod4. I am a long time battlefield fan, and not one of those people who migrated over yelling cod sux, battlefield u can do airstrikes!
