portal 2 is probably the ONLY AAA game released in 2011 that does not have ambient occlusion, HDR, large level without constant loading in-between, realistic lighting,...

in fact i'm surprised portal 2 isn't called a "console-port" because some of the ground textures in there are very nasty.

No company makes "new" engines... they're all doing the very same thing Valve does - they're improving their current engine. The only difference is Valve doesn't add numbers after the name whenever they add a major feature, while others do.

The source engine is only a foundation for the additional stuff that they continue to add to it which makes it the modern game engine that it is. That is the reason why it continues to get upgraded and is so optimized. They add new graphical effects, physics, capability's, etc... to an already great and optmized engine.

There's almost no point in making a whole new engine when the new engine most likely is going to re use half of the code in your old engine, take a lot of time to fully optimize, and eat up a lot of resources that could otherwise be used on newer and better games.

You can say this about any game

Hardly surprising that a guy who has a Crysis avatar is obsessed over graphics.

You ever heard of a storyline? Game play? Both equally as important as graphics.

Sure Crysis looks awesome, but the game flat out sucks. I'd rather play a game like Portal that has some imagination and acceptable graphics than a piece of 'benchmarking software' like Crysis, because let's face it, Crysis simply cannot be classed as a game.

When Day of Defeat Source came out. Shaders were COMPLETELY re-designed. Nope, nothing new there.

When Orange Box came out. Threaded particle system. Nope, no enhancements there either.

Also with Orange Box: Facial animations. Nope, nothing new.

Support for more cores: No extra capabilities added.

I guess none of that falls under "new effects" nor "new capabilities."
