You ever heard of a storyline? Game play? Both equally as important as graphics.

Sure Crysis looks awesome, but the game flat out sucks. I'd rather play a game like Portal that has some imagination and acceptable graphics than a piece of 'benchmarking software' like Crysis, because let's face it, Crysis simply cannot be classed as a game.

dude u have a gtx 480, you obviously care about gfx too. If the people who enjoy valve games dont mind the gfx then valve doesnt care, but these same people will ridicule other games for using the same engine. Remember the thread which stated Bethesda would not be using true dx11, people were complaining all over the place calling it a console port, while skyrim looks better than any valve game. Also the last time a valve game had a good storyline was HL2 so I wouldnt go there. Portal had good gameplay but I know plenty of people out there who got a kick out of crysis gameplay, I wasnt one of them

well cod went to **** after first modern warfare, lost almost all of it's playability appeal for which it was know, at least imho. so at least they should give some nice graphics, which is impossible because it wouldn't run on consoles, because of which it turned to **** in the first place. A devil's circuit indeed.

Support for more cores: No extra capabilities added.

I guess none of that falls under "new effects" nor "new capabilities."

portal barely use 30% of my CPU (running stock) so it use like a full core and about 5% of a 2nd core. yea i suppose that count as "support for one more core"

the improvements aren't as vast as you may imagine. also valve particle system simply sucks, don't even get me into that. the smokes and fire, when they touch the ground, make these ugly unrealistic line and they do not blend into the picture (they are not soft particles). very poor techniques if you ask me.

valve's particles is the left picture.

oh and exactly WHEN were these "capabilities" added? maybe 4 years in the past?
does portal 2, lastest valve game in 2011, use any of them?

portal 2 is probably the ONLY AAA game released in 2011 that does not have ambient occlusion, HDR, large level without constant loading in-between, realistic lighting,...

in fact i'm surprised portal 2 isn't called a "console-port" because some of the ground textures in there are very nasty.
Your knowledge of programming and game design is obviously very limited. The engine is optimized because its been configured and optimized for over 7 years now. They don't need a new engine because the flexibility of code allows them to add in new graphical effects/physics effects and capability's that the new engines offer while allowing them to have the base of an optimized tried and true game engine that can run on a very wide spectrum of computers.

Your 30 fps comment is funny considering that you have an avatar of the game Crysis. Which is one of the most widely considered unoptimized engines out there. I can run any of Valves games maxed out and they all look beautiful and don't have nearly as many bugs as the engines that some game devs release every 2 years for their games (Their new engines re use half of the code that their old engine uses btw).

Anyways, anyone saying that the latest iteration of the Source engine is not up to par obviously hasn't seen pics of CS:GO or DOTA 2.

Oh boy, you really caught me out there! I mean it's not like some of today's demanding games have a decent storyline so why would I ever need a decent GPU!?

Deus Ex 3
Dead Space 2
Batman Arkham City
GTA IV
STALKER series
The Witcher series

All of which have a solid storyline and very good game play, all of which require a half decent GPU @ 1920 x 1080.

I DO NOT play a game for its graphical prowess, I play a game because of its story line, if it so happens to have 'super duper' awesome graphics then that's just a bonus. My GPU is simply there to make sure that I can play any game I desire at the resolution I have available.

I have no idea how you even came to such a conclusion. Simply because I own a graphics card does not mean I care about graphics at all, it means I care about the fluidity of my game play.

Valve uses the same engine over and over again, the fanboys don't care.

Activision uses the same engine and haters come out of the woodwork.

Wait so If that's the case then why everyones only response to IW is that they use the same engine :/

I like the source engine. They have been adding major features over the years to make it what it is today. As long as they keep adding better textures and update to dx11 and so forth, we don't need a source 2. They keep updating as hardware updates on an average level.

I mostly like their storyline. I end up playing HL2 and the episodes again sometimes and I really enjoy it. Played Crysis 2 and it just seems 'meh' to me. The graphics are great but that's it. I don't think about the story in that game. I just play.

Now to try STALKER.

I agree with your first and last paragraphs but you can't call Crysis unoptimized without showing similar graphics performing faster on a different engine without compromising visuals.

^this.
300 fps > omg so optimized!!
13 fps > *** IS THIS UNOPTIMIZED GARBAGE??!!!
even though the 13 fps picture looks miles ahead..

.
well are they really updating it at all?
they're not even using DX10. stil on 9.0c
and their textures are some of the worst i've ever seen in 2011 AAA titles.
