If they do it right they can keep their engine and perform major overhauls. I would have to know more about the code in the engine itself though to know if that is easily done or not. Unfortunately I don't work for Valve, man that'd be sweet.

They get rid of a lot of a lot of the near useless hardware intensive calculations that make the game run like crap while adding very little visual fidelity.

Crytek basically tried to make Crysis a movie ran in real time without considering graphical optimization.
Modded inis don't change the engine. Nothing in your post deals with any fundamental flaws in the engine. Since the topic is about game engines and not texture/shadow resolution, SSAO, etc... Your post has no legs to stand on.

I appreciate that a lot of people moan about the engine, and I don't really know why.

Like a person above me suggested, maybe they're using the wrong terminology. Instead of being angry at the 'engine' itself, maybe they're using the word 'engine' to stress just how identical every release is in terms of content. Although that would be an assumption on my part.

I got my GTX480 for £195 BNIB 9 months ago, you may not appreciate just how good of a deal that is, but I can assure you that it was a steal. Likewise I got my X6 for an awesome price. You may notice that all of my parts are at one time a price : performance leader. I don't care about stroking my e-peen with the latest and greatest, I only care about running all of my games whilst spending the least amount of money and achieving a moderate amount of future proofing capability. This GTX480 will last a very long time in that respect.

I based my assumptions off of his original post were he was spurting graphical fidelity all over the place. Not once did he mention the importance of a story line or game play. I just found it ironic that his avatar also fit the stereotype that he was displaying.

I could swear that a high percentage of PC gamers would happily give up storyline and game play just for something to look pretty. I would happily play any game that looks like the original Deus Ex if it offered the same amount of immersion and complex storyline, which is quite sad that even today not one single game has de-throned Deus Ex of its storyline prowess. Metal Gear Solid and Half Life are very close but just not quite there.

I quite literally couldn't give a flying monkeys about graphics because all games today are more than acceptable. We need more storylines and I don't think people whining about 'new engines' will help deliver that.

On the topic of the source engine, L4D2 is also a major achievement when you consider the sheer number of zombies and particle effects on the screen. Valve made it happen with clever tricks to make the zombies look more varied without requiring huge amounts of GPU memory. They had to work with a tightly enforced memory budget and that is what caused them to look for alternatives ways to make the most out of what they have.

If source has one weakness it's dynamic lighting. Unlike UE3 which absolutely loves dynamic lights, source chokes rather quickly. You should like source games for allowing you to use conventional AA instead of the blurry post processing antialiasing methods that most modern engines force you to use. So its greatest weakness is also one of its strengths.

That's because Activision has a new CoD coming out every year while Valve has a new game every 2-3 yrs on avg and Valve actually DOES upgrade with each new release.

Hate to break it to you but aside from tessellation ( which you have to use in huge amounts ), none of the new graphic special effects are significantly better. Everything at this point is and will continue to be incrementally better.

well are they really updating it at all?
they're not even using DX10. stil on 9.0c
and their textures are some of the worst i've ever seen in 2011 AAA titles.
Only PC elitists and Tech nerds care about the Dx version. 99% of the awesomeness you see from Dx 11 titles comes from Dx 9 effects. In fact, i think that devs just throw in a pitiful amount of Dx 11 in their games just to shut guys like you up.

And since you don't know, using Dx 10 is practically pointless for most devs since it offers little to nothing in the way of graphical improvements. Dx 10.1 is supposed to make programming easier but since devs have to include Dx 9 for 50% of PC gamers that have it, it's pointless extra work. Dx 11 offers real improvement but most Dx 11 GPUs aren't strong enough to use it in a full game and only 5-7% of gamers can play Dx11 anyway.

I still anticipate a new engine from Valve when a new console comes out. ANY engine maker who comes out with a new engine before then is very short sighted.

This and in addition to that, valve also brings the improvements to its previous titles.

This is fine. Valve has always been updating source throughout the years. Yes, they should look at developing a new engine, but there is no reason why they should update right now.

they will probably come out with source 2 when the new consoles come out. Source looks decent on the consoles, looks really good on the pc, why bother upgrading?

Valve is raking in the dough... they don't need to invest in a new engine. They are making a huge profit off of indie developers atm.

ok you don't care about graphics. that's your opinion and you've established that.

but this thread is about graphics and the engines that deliver them. why are you bringing storylines and gameplay and other irrelevances into an engines discussion?

likewise, why would i mention storyline and gameplay when i'm discussing engine capabilities?
and i'm sorry that my avatar is so funny to you but i like it and i'm not going to change it.
srsly, going off-topic and making fun of other's avatars...are you showing your best debate skills?
