The Source engine 2004 vs 2011 is a huge improvement. Just because you can run it at ridiculous settings doesn't mean it's old, it means it works!
CoD engine is a horrible engine, we say they need to change it because it doesn't look any better then Source but runs at horrible frame rates. MW2 & Blops don't even run smooth and look like crap compared to FrostBite.

I'll take my Source and FrostBite engines over whatever CoD uses any day.

Portal 2 certainly does look amazing for a Source game, but the majority of its amazing comes from heavily prebaked scripted sequences that aren't dynamic at all, so really not a very efficient means of game making

And when we also go back and look at Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, particularly user made content compared to official, it becomes even more obvious that Source needs far too much work from professional artists to make things look good

Source games can be made to look absolutely fine imo. Yeah some improvements would always be nice but why add them if there's no use or the effect they have is really small.

For example I've been playing Vindictus recently and I find the graphics awesome looking. (vindictus is a source game, just not by valve)

Secondly, my points are more than relevant, if you don't think they are then maybe we shouldn't be 'debating' at all. We are discussing the 'relevancy' of an engine update. My points are that one is not necessary because we should be focusing on quality of content, not graphical prowess. How the hell can't you wrap your head around that?

Optimized (High image quality to FPS ratio)
Configurable (gigantic list of console commands and config files)

It's an almost perfect engine, just with outdated effects. I say, well done Valve for creating an engine, and not letting it languish by updating it regularly and maintaining all your main games.

I wonder if a game like Garrys Mod could be as easily made as it was in source, than in another engine like Unreal or Frostbite.
