[egmnow] Valve Talks Up Source Engine 2 - Page 10

If Valve updated the Source engine to make it's games look close enough to BF3 and Crysis in terms of graphical quality and called it Source Engine 2, you wouldn't notice. You're just raging because Valve actually updates the engine with new and enhanced features, where as CoD just slaps a new title on the game without trying to up the texture detail, particle effects, or anything like that. That's why Valve gets a "free pass."

EDIT: BTW, I jumped off the CoD hate train a while ago. It's a fun game, but I'm not going to lie to myself and say that it's not the same as last years iteration.

The Source engine doesn't need replaced. Valve is good about keeping it up to date. I like the engine but there are some flaws in it that need worked on (water physics! But no one really has that). Tis a good engine. And btw: isn't this just a recycled news article that has already been posted? I know the topic HAS been discussed already.

Interesting quote from the primary source article:

Quote:
With COD and Battlefield redefining what a FPS is (and they’re so huge now), and other people coming along with great ideas and new perks for their games, why is now the best time for Counter-Strike to make a comeback?

If you look at the PC, a version of Counter-Strike is still the number one played strategic fighter, and there’s a reason for that. It’s about the competition and it’s about the skill. So when you’re playing it’s you against the other person and it’s not based on them getting three more kills previously so they have something they’re going to blow you up with, or they play a thousand more hours than you so they have a different weapon load-out. It’s about during that match, how you play is how you’re going to win or lose. That’s not to knock those other games, those are really fun; I played Modern Warfare 2 which hit a sweet spot with me and I put in an embarrassing number of hours with it, and I’m really looking forward to Battlefield 3. But those are a different kind of game and we think the long lasting appeal of Counter-Strike is its sport-like competition where the rules aren’t changed out from underneath you and that work you put in to get better at it pays off.

The Source engine 2004 vs 2011 is a huge improvement. Just because you can run it at ridiculous settings doesn't mean it's old, it means it works!
CoD engine is a horrible engine, we say they need to change it because it doesn't look any better then Source but runs at horrible frame rates. MW2 & Blops don't even run smooth and look like crap compared to FrostBite.

I'll take my Source and FrostBite engines over whatever CoD uses any day.
MW2 never ran at horrible frame rates. In fact, a first gen Core2duo and 7800+ series nvidia card would literally destory that game. I'll also disagree that the latest iterations of the Source engine look "better" but that might be personal taste. (I'm talking MW2 Vs L4D/Portal 2)

The IW COD engines in general are far from horrible... In fact, they're likely the best suited for competitive play due to the Q3 netcode. (CoD 1,2,4~)

Blackops on the other hand, I'll agree on. The game manages to look worse, run at sub par frame rates, and stutter every often.. How Treyarch managed to screw up an even OLDER version of the same modded Q3 engine is beyond me.

Stop trolling you obviously don't understand that ini's do control how engines work. It was the same thing with the Oblivion engine. You can determine what it renders, what it doesnt render, how it renders stuff, draw distance, etc etc....

That's usually the way it works... unfortunately.

The community knows what the community wants more than the big developers do. Look at Project Reality and other quality mods like the Oblivion, Crysis, Unreal, and handful of other big third party releases. Wasn't even Red Orchestra originally "just a mod?" GTA mods, another example.

I don't know if Crysis been updated since or not, but I used to hate Crysis so much haha, aside from I can't see the enemies in the woods (starting to hate any game that plays in the jungle and stuff) , everytime i benchmark it, I can get very different results for various reasons. <- personal experience that made me put the discs back in the retail box and brought it to work and gave it to my friend for free haha

anyways, I like Valve games, couldn't careless if they put extreme graphic in or not, as long as it plays good and fun , and doesn't looks like PlayStation beat them up game blocky graphics, then it's all good,

I stopped caring about COD since COD4, mmm.... I don't hate it either but I really do find everything after that are like 1 big game seperated to different titles, as far as single player goes that is. I cant' speak for multiplayer gaming, don't enjoy them much at all

Just let valve do what they thinks is best i think, at least so far everyting valve have released are hard to be consider bad games imo.

I like the source engine, though I really wish they would make a new one.

so far they have done a great job making it seem new and good looking...unlike COD which look exactly the same and feel the same each time...which is not bad for people that like that, it is just that man... they milk it dry(IW/treyarch)

They may say this now but there will a time when Frostbite 2 will be norm in terms of game engines and they will have to get their buts in gear.

The engine is starting to show its age IMO.

This is one of those times I hate being a gamer.

If you look at storyline, gameplay and fun.. Valve games are absolutely amazing. I don't know any company that has put out as many high quality games as valve.

Whether they officially call it "Source Engine 2" or they just leave it "Source Engine" really shouldn't be the issue here..

Yes, I do at times wish valve would improve the graphics, however I don't ever go "OH MY GOD THIS GAME IS HORRIBLE!" I go. "Man, just imagine if other games had this level of detail put into story, gameplay and fun factor along with the graphics of the bigger hitting games."

However, it does bother me that people are *always* going to nit-pick and never be happy. Case in point. Iphone 4s. People are mad because it isn't "iphone 5".. Literally.. people think because it isn't "iphone 5" it is somehow inferior to what it would be if it came out with the "iphone 5" name.

Valve could tweak the Source Engine until you couldn't tell you weren't looking through a live feed into an alternate reality from your monitor. And people would *still* be disappointed because they didn't call it "source engine 2" and they would think "oh man, battlefield has better graphics source engine is so old!"

There will always be something to gripe about. My friend gripes "man valve is so lazy, they are still using source engine! Oh my god portal 2 isn't even worth 15$ to me! Man, they still haven't released half life 3!"

And he is entitled to his opinion just like everyone else.

However, if any of you *seriously* had a problem with valve, I invite you to do the same thing I do when I have a problem with a company.

I neither buy, nor pirate their games.

As for me, I love valve and think their games are worth the money. They can do what they are doing till it doesn't work for them anymore as far as I am concerned.
