M4A87TD EVO and Crossfire X

Thread Starter
Hi all! I have a ATi Radeon HD6870 which performes well in games, but I recently bought another card to bump things up running Crossfire.

#1 I completely uninstalled all AMD drivers (also used driver sweeper to remove registry junk from AMD)
#2 Connected the 2nd HD6870 to the black PCI-E slot and connected the CFG-bridge between the two cards. Made sure that this has enough power from the two PCI-e power connectors. My PSU is a 850 corsair hx.
#3 Verified that I had the lastest BIOS.
#4 Installed newest graphics drivers from AMD + Crossfire profiles and enabled Crossfire X..

Now here is the problem, when I activate Crossfire in the ATi control panel, my framerate drops! We're talking 30-40% loss of FPS, compared to a single HD6870. Is this because the 2nd PCI-E slot only performs in 4x bandwidth, or is this a different problem?
I would like to troubleshoot asap, since my country have a 14 day return policy. If I cant get crossfire to work on this MB, i'd probably return my new HD6870..

I have tried to do a complete driver re-install. I have also tried to run both cards as singles. They both perform well in single mode, giving me a 55 avg.fps in Battlefield: BC2. With crossfire, it dips down to mid 30's and very choppy. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply,
I have already installed that package. No help. Tried to search the AMD/ASUS board. Not many are running crossfire with my MB, but some are. I still dont know if its the 2nd 4x PCI-E slot, which means that this MB is really not built for crossfire at all. Just labeled as "compatible" which is lame.

PCIe x4 won't bottleneck a 6870 that much.

You sure you have the second card in the black slot, and not the very bottom one?

Pretty sure, since it's only two slots on the MB where the two cards will physically fit

Hahaha my bad, I was looking at a small picture of the board and it was hard to tell. Honestly, I don't know what would be causing the problem.

Sorry man.

Thats okay
I tried playing Bad Company 2 campaign, while looking at two instances of GPU-Z on my second monitor.

Both cards are clocked up to 900mhz properly, and they are both building up 60-80% GPU load whilst playing, but the framerate is still better if I play with a single card. I don't get this -_-

Honestly, I'm beginning to think your CPU may be a bottleneck. I had a 1090T and it severely bottlenecked my GTX470s.

Well, all cores are moving at 90% give or take, so it's working it's ass of while I play BFBC2, but still - should this actually reduce the performance when enabling crossfire?

If so, I hate my life. ^^
