Who has cut the cord and no longer paying for cable? - Page 13

Like many, I use a combination of Netflix, local channels over HD Antenna, and legal internet streaming.

I don't Torrent anything because Comcast flags IPs when Torrent traffic is detected, and I figure if I'm having to tunnel traffic through proxies and VPNs to hide what I'm doing on the internet, I probably shouldn't be doing it. You know, I'm one of those honest people who's as irritated as anyone else by things like SOPA and PIPA, but only because it cripples the legal aspects of the internet that has made it so great.

Of course, I also buy all of my games, movies, and music, too.

Ya, like I said, I'm weird.

Some years ago when I returned from work some station was airing Spongebob. It was probably the only sensible show for a human to watch. Good thing my parents had a TV in the kitchen back then. Otherwise I haven't really used a TV for probably a decade and still don't miss a thing. Actually I'm way too lazy for movies/anime too nowadays. I wish we had proper hills around here to go biking some more. redface.gif
Next year we have some mandatory per household fee for the public stations in this godforsaken country. The program will most likely still royally suck but I was beyond caring years ago anyway.
The thing about keeping the kids from waking your up early on weekends is probably the best thing about all this rolleyes.gif

It's a $40 flat panel Phillips model from walmart. It ALL depends on your geographic location (flat, non hilly area, cant have a ton of trees, etc.). The reviews on walmart's site are awful but I chalk that up to morons blaming the hardware and not being aware of their poor signal location. Also, people hook it up and toss in in a closet or set it on an end-table and expect 100 hd channels. My unit is mounted on the north east corner of my house and it's amazing, it grabs everything 100% clear but ABC. ABC signal is coming from the south west. If I wanted a few more channels I would have to mount it around the chimney so it has a clear 360 degree view of the sky. I highly recommend it if you don't live in the boonies or the mountains.

Thanks for the info. Gonna have to pick one up and see what I get. It'll change again in a couple months when the g/f and I move into a house, but at least we should be able to stay away from paying for cable.

I would buy something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882790012

You get the best reception when the signal doesn't have to go through brick wall by mounting in your attic or outdoors.

I live in Toronto, and I'm getting channels from western and eastern usa, plus northern Ontario.

I'm sure my apartment complex would love seeing that on my balcony lachen.gif
maybe once we're in a house something like that would be feasible.

^ This. Brick houses are killers, I could barely pick up 3 channels with an indoor amplified antenna. I never thought of trying a higher end model in the attic/crawlspace. I would think the shingles would be a signal blocker.
