Some help overclocking on new MB (Maximus IV Extreme-Z, testing)

Thread Starter
Hi all,
As per my other thread regarding a BIOS query (http://www.overclock.net/intel-bios/1143728-maximus-iv-extreme-z-bios-new-post.html), I am testing the new motherboard mentioned in the thread title.

It did work with the old overclocking settings from my previous board (some different naming conventions on features here and there in the BIOS) but I am interested in Prime95 folding, and as such I was advised to enable Hyperthreading. This has changed what I was once stable at so I'm going through the usual steps of overclocking again.

Currently I was stable at 4.8GHz with 1.43v vcore, 1.55v PLL, rest auto, however I tried decreasing vcore a tad (1.41v~) and everytime I run the 1792 FFT with 3GB of 4GB of my ram on test 2 I get a BSOD always 0x124. I've tried increasing PLL up to 1.80v from 1.55v, no difference there. Any suggestions on how I should proceed, or just lump it and stay with 1.43v vcore?

Thanks.

If you've already messed aroudn with VTT and PLL that just leaves the vcore, increase it and see what happens.

EDIT:

Just realised, you may have to tweak the VTT and PLL again for your new mobo. What was stable before may not be stable now because of your new mobo, I think the PLL voltage is tied to the motherboard the vtt is more IMC 'control' so cpu dependant.

I see, haven't tried VTT at all, what's the lowest/highest limit generally for that voltage? I don't want to find myself damaging the chip badly tongue.gif.

Read the OP of THIS thread as thoroughly as possible lol and also this POST. It's a lot to read but it'll surely help. By the way max vccio is 1.2v and pll votlage is 1.89v.

Hope that helps thumb.gif

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately despite various combinations of PLL and VCCIO voltages I was unable to remove the 0x124 error, so I've nudged vcore back to where it was and lowered PLL back to 1.55v and VCCIO back to 1.065v (auto). I did notice however that the Prime95 test did last longer when I increased vccio to around 1.15v, for example, it usually crashes 0x124 shortly after test 2 begins, but it lasted till around the test 4, not sure what bearing that has on this though.

Since I believe I can't adjust PLL or VCCIO to allow for a slightly lower vcore and to fix the 0x124 BSOD, I was wondering if I can safely and gradually decrease VCCIO/VCCSA until the system becomes unstable (as I'm sure this would help CPU temperature and lifespan)?

Also do you think I would benefit greatly if I upgraded my BIOS from 0203 to the latest beta?

Finally someone else that has the same board. I have found that on the M4E-Z, the VCCSA/IO helped my 124 error out. I'm at 5ghz 1.400v Vcore, 1.700v PLL, and what made my 124's stop is VCCSA/IO. I had it at 1.150v and still was 124'n. 1.175v is what stopped it. I run my ram at 1866 8-8-8-20-1t. Since the change of VCCSA/IO, it's been good.

I have been trying to find out that VCCSA/IO was not the System Agent and was VCCIO. It its VCCIO and you can change it safely up to 1.250v for 24/7 use and this is coming from a 3rd level Engineer at Asus. I had to go through 3 levels of support with Asus to find someone that knew WHY they changed the setting on the Z board.

On the M4E P67, there is both VCCIO and VCCSA.

On our M4E-Z, there is only VCCSA/IO, but that's only changing the VCCIO voltage.

I found that on my 2500k @ 5ghz, 1.700v CPU PLL let me go as low as 1.375v(bios/idle) and 1.392v(load in windows) for 15hrs Prime95 Blend. 1.800v needed over 1.400v in bios and going lower than 1.700v didn't help me any either.

Hope this helps. I also use 130%-140% for Over current on the cpu.

Also, I'm not sure that we have the option for using OFFSET VOLTAGE on this board. I have not found how to set that yet. I have only been able to use Manual Voltage settings.

Hi,
Thanks for replying with this information! If this works the same +rep to you, or +rep anyway once I've tried it either way smile.gif.

Are you using BIOS 0706 (I'm wondering if I should update to it from 0210)?

EDIT: +rep'd anyway in the meantime.

EDIT #2: Oh, to get offset working you need to make some changes to the Digi+ VRM/Power Control settings.

1) Change VCore Phase Control from Extreme to Manual
2) Change Manual Adjustment to Ultra Fast

You should now be able to change your vcore voltage from Manual to Offset accordingly.

No prob buddy!! Let me check on the bios I'm using. I haven't updated it in the past few weeks I know.

These boards are a little tricky to get used to the settings, but once you do, very easy to overclock. I have booted my 2500k at 5.4ghz with 1.500v:D

I will check when I get home, but I think that I updated to the 403 bios. My 480 is coming back from RMA today and I will be putting it back into my loop. Once I get it up and running, I will check. I will probably update to the 706 today. Remember you have dual bios and you can test both. You can press the button and switch between them.
