New I7 Build

Thread Starter
Hi folks,

I've been using gaming computers for awhile now and instead of buying a pre built system from Dell, or another gaming laptop from Toshiba and paying their premium.

I've decided to build my own rig and in the process gain a little more in depth knowledge of computer building and their components, so far I've already installed the parts I've bought and successfully booted the bios.

Coolermaster HAF X
I7 2600K
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler
Asrock Z68 Extreme 7 Gen 3
16 GB of G. Skill Ripjaws X 1866 9-10-9-28-2N
Silverstone Strider ST1500

What I'm going to purchase this coming thursday is:

SSD Intel 510 Series 120 GB, not the fastest but the best in reliability
Blu Ray burner
Win7 OS

After a month of getting the ssd, blu ray burner, snd win7 os I plan to purchase a:

XFX Radeon HD 6990 4GB, 1TB WD Black 6 GB/S HDD and a 51 in 1 card reader

And finally after another month:

XFX Radeon HD 6990 4GB so I can quad crossfire

My question is should I even bother buying the 6990s since AMD's 7xxx series cards are gonna come out next year?

Is the new 7xxx series cards worth the wait?

Without any previews from AMD we really have no clue as to how much improvement they will be vs the 6990s I'm planning to buy

Since there is no official AMD announcement on when the 7xxx series cards are going to be released I could end up waiting 6 months down the line without a video card.

If I do end up quad crossfiring the 6990's how fast does my I7 2600K need to be to avoid a CPU bottleneck when I'm gaming?

You could save a few $ and get a M4 instead of the Intel 510, it's just as reliable but a good deal cheaper too. You do not mention your resolution that you'd be playing at. Bottlenecks won't apply if your running Nvidia Surround resolutions, so you CPU would be fine.

Your TV is 1920x1080, a single 6990 would blitz that resolution let alone two of them.

2560x1600 though is very demanding indeed, although i feel one 6990 would still do very well with that. But two would be sweet to have. If you do go with 2560x1600 at least your buying the GPU's a month apart, which will give you plenty of time to test if a 2nd is required.

Thank you for the insight I might just forgo the almost 900 bucks if I find that going quad crossfire on my 32" 1080P LCD TV wont be able to get to 2560 x 1680 resolution

However if I do end up going quad fire 6990's what speed should my I7 2600K be running at to not start to bottleneck?
