well i thought you were trying to run already made programs in python, was just saying that since if they weren't done in python 2, they wouldn't work in python 3 not really a change of heart. since you are learning python, might as well learn both or at least what makes them different
fair enough, I'm defiantly going to learn both eventually but I'm going to start with Python 2.7 first

I'll have to weigh in for Python 3. Python 3 is being developed; Python 2 isn't anymore. Python 2 code will eventually be migrated to Python 3.
Honestly, there are only a handful of changes between Python 2.7 and 3.x. Enough that there is a script called 2to3 that runs through your 2.7 code and updates it to 3. Learning one will basically teach you the other. If you just want to learn the language, I suggest Python 3. If you want to learn it in order to built something right away, learn Python 2.7. 2.7 has a vast amount of libraries and frameworks to work on projects, while not many of them have been ported to Python 3, yet.

When I was learning the differences between 2.7 and 3, I decided to port a couple popular libraries. This not only established the differences clearly to me, but also helped the move towards Python 3 for everyone else.
Yeah, as you're starting from scratch, I'd really recommend Python 3. Python 2 has been around for ages, hence why loads of stuff is written for it. But Python 3 is the future, it's already the default on Arch Linux, the main modules used worldwide have been ported to it, and their development is on the Python 3 version.

As others have said though, the difference is minimal. If you put this at the beginning of all of your 2.7 scripts, you'll mimic the main difference:

Code:
__metaclass__ = type
That, and stuff like using print as a function, not a statement:

Code:
print('x')
There's other minor stuff, like small arithmetic changes, and some different type behaviour, but you probably won't encounter it. Learn the basics, then worry about the specific changes.

Thanks Jimi and Chemicalfan

Do you know of any good resources to learn from? there's no "hard way to learn python 3" yet and I got on really well with those lesson. It would tell me to do things then say, "and if you don't know how to do this....search it" So it was more of a nudge in the right direction instead of just giving me the answers. Best way to learn really

Probably the current best book out there for Python 3 is available for free. It's a revised version of Dive into Python called Dive into Python 3. Don't forget the official documentation, as well.

The official documentation isn't the most friendly imo, Dive Into Python is nice though.

You could do worse than following your book, but executing scripts against Python 3. The print function is the most obvious change, but most other basic stuff should run unaltered. If you hit an error, check out the error against Dive Into Python 3 to see if it's obviously. The differences between 2 & 3 are pretty small, and I doubt you'll encounter them - if you do, worry about it then

thanks Jimi, I'll have a look and yeah the documentation doesn't make much sense to me so I'll try dive into python 3 but if i don't get on well with it, or it's not as good as learning python the hard way I'll try and mix and match.

Thanks for all the help guys. Gotta love OCN for the help

Pretty much this. I used Ubuntu 10.04 and really enjoyed it, but then I read some about Arch Linux and I'm now in love with it. If you're looking to learn about linux and want to get your hands a little dirtier you could try it after using Ubuntu for a while. Your boot speed will increase tenfold
