Headroom is overpriced. Amazon is the way to go.

Whichever store is the cheapest is the way to go...

The ATH-AD700's are good for gaming. HERE's a link to a deal thread with some info on them. To get a broader view just use google to find some more reviews.

I disagree, I had the AD900's and they were terrible. The sound had a congested feel to it and there was almost no bass at all.
I would suggest a Grado SR-80 depending on how much of each genre the OP listens to. They are great rock and acoustic cans, they have a very clear high end, too much for metal. The bass is good, but not great, and they are not the best for gaming, but were certainly good enough.
If possible I would say to get an Ultrasone, I'm not sure they have any under $100 though, and they would not work well with onboard sound.

Grado's are terrible for gaming..

The AD700's are definitely lacking in the bass department but have a large sound stage which makes them good for gaming. HERE is a link to a great post with quite a few headphone reviews with respect to gaming.

Sennheiser HD555 are good all around headphones, but won't fit your budget unless on sale. Good sound card or USB DAC is recommended but not mandatory. 1/4 plug is preferable, as the huge 1/8 adapter is known to break headphone sockets. If you want something cheap, try Koss ProtaPROs.

What are you talking about? The HD5xx series is terrible off onboard sound, it gets quite staticy, I tried the 598, the others might be different, but I doubt it.
1/8 plug is the standard and used for almost everything, 1/4 is usually found on higher end equipment and it will only break the headphone jack if you try jamming it in a 1/8 one which isn't easy to do.
