DAC/Amp for Denon AH-D2000 Headphones

Thread Starter
After recently receiving my ATH-AD700's I've decided that I absolutely love them and would like to explore a bit further into the world of audio. I've decided that the Denon AH-D2000 would best fit my needs and price range.

Anyway, I've read that these basically require a DAC + Amp in order to get full quality so I'm trying to figure out which pair to buy. So here are a couple of questions for you guys-

1. Should I go with a combo DAC/Amp, or a split DAC + Amp. I know the Asus Xonar Essence One has been getting some hype as a DAC and thought I could possibly pair that up with an amp (although I'm not too sure on this).

2. Basically, what is the best DAC/Amp combo to go with the D2000? I will definitely be getting an at-home setup, but feel free to recommend me a mobile one as well, as I might consider grabbing one of those as well.

So far I'm leaning towards the FiiO E7/E9 combo or the Nuforce Icon 2. The Nuforce Icon Mobile would also be my mobile choice.

What are your guys thoughts?

Have a look at the Fiio E10?

Only good NuForce is the HDP. I assume your budget is.. 200? Or what?

I don't suggest the E7+e9 combo.

I think you'd be better off buying a Little Dot MKIII for 160 or so. Tube amps will help the recessed mids of the D2000. You can grab a Xonar DX while you're at it.

My budget is pretty flexible - I'm looking for midrange equipment. I purchased the Little Dot MKIII Amp as you suggested, I'm assuming I need a DAC now? I have a Xonar DX but I'd definitely like to upgrade it.

I suggested the MK3 merely as fitting in with the 200 dollar budget I assumed you were using, if you have more, you can definitely look into getting a better DAC/AMP combo, but if you already purchased it, are fine with that selection and are merely looking for a DAC now, then what's the budget on the DAC? If you haven't yet purchased the amp then whats the total budget for the DAC/AMP?

Curious why you recommended a tube amp for the D2000. The general consensus over at head-fi is that the D2000 sound best with a solid state/hybrid amp (Filo e9 or Little dot i+).

I'm running the D2000 through the Xonar DX (had the cans for 3 days now). They sound good, but I can tell they will be great once I get the e9. Probably will also get the JMoney pads as well to get the most out of them.

Thing about Head-fi is you'll find an opinion for anything you want to support.

I feel a tube amp would be better for the D2ks because it'll improve the recessed mids and tubes also give a distinct tone to headphones which I feel works better with the D2ks than a Solid State amp. Of course, others will believe the complete opposite and say that solid state amps make them sound better. In all honesty it's up to the listener.
