I've played CS competitively for 5 years, I'd hate for valve go and change the game completely with a "patch" making it similar to COD or whatever else.

I'll second this. I played Unreal Tournament at a high level competitively (approx 1900hrs of play) for 3 years. When it started dying off I tried to learn Quake Live... quickly realizing that by the time I could compete at a half decent level it too would die and I'd have to learn a new game again.

There are very few games with competitive longevity and, although very unlikely, I hope they stick around forever (like real-world sports). From my own experience, jumping to the new "flavor of the month" is not appealing when you play only for competition.

For myself it's too late - at (almost) 24 I'm too old to ever play fast-paced FPS's at a high level again... but there's hope for other games. Personally I've faded from gaming and now focus my competitive nature on real-life activities - things I can do for a lifetime that won't become 'obsolete'. I just can't be bothered to put hundreds of hours into a game when in the back of my head I'm thinking "in 6 years this game probably won't get played competitively anymore".

It looked good to me. I just think the auto-snipers need a little nerf done.

I still think it would easier to just release an HD texture patch.
It would be easier yes, I'm still awaiting a HD texture pack for 1.6 "CS PRO Mod??"... I dislike CSS, the game feels weird and clunky to me. Though there are others out there that love it and have went into the professional level. I feel for most of them who spent countless hours practicing their skill who've gotten burned from that new CSS update...

For that point I'd rather just see a new CS every 5 years. So it doesn't affect anyone in a more professional setting, with a random patch of game changes...? Honestly I could careless about the random pubbers and the casual gamer. There are plenty of games out on the market.

Majority of the professional CS players only really play CS. Let them have the game they strive to be a professional at, without major changes through a patch.. Such as weapon accuracy, added or removed weapons, hit damage changes, bullet spray, movement. All those things become second nature when you play at a competitive level. Once their changed it's time to relearn it all. Which takes away from practicing for tournaments. If thats the case just make a new CS and introduce more features as well. It looks like Valve did that with CS:GO.

This looks like a lot of fun. I never played 1.6 or source competitively, though I did play CSS quite a bit casually (especially gun game ), but I had some friends who were really into it. I'll definitely pick this up.

For the fast-paced FPS's, yes. The top Quake and UT players had near inhuman reaction times... and by 24 you're on the downhill. You can endlessly improve your mental (prediction) gameplay but when a game is this fast it can only get you so far. I had relatively poor strategy and relied on reflex twitch weapons so this goes extra for me.

That, and I just don't have the time anymore. At my peak I was playing around 115 hours a month - it was essentially a second full time job (and I put biking and partying before the game).

As a PS, I don't expect many people to agree/grasp the age thing but I believe it's true. Just as I cannot comprehend a star quarterback or olympic athletes abilities, at the top of any game the skill level is so high that even half decent players don't understand all the quirks.

Back on topic - It still makes me sad that competitive video games fade away. I could play UT for the rest of my life and never try a new game, and I'm sure many feel the same way about CS. To see something you poured your heart and soul into just fade into oblivion is pretty disheartening...
