USB vs Optical for DAC; Realtek ALC889 SPDIF Question

Thread Starter
I'm considering getting a Tianyun Zero DAC for myself, the 2009 edition with USB input. A bit of a two parter:

1. Will I see any difference between using USB input and optical input? Admittedly this is pure curiosity more than a practical question, as I've optical on my motherboard and my sound card and will be using this either way.

2. Are there any problems with the Realtek ALC889 onboard chipset resampling the audio if I were to use onboard optical to the DAC? Is it worth getting a soundcard just for optical output over onboard?

Thanks biggrin.gif

I have the same exact DAC and have tried using both USB and Optical-out (on-board) through various speakers and headphones and I cannot hear a difference whatsoever.

That +Rep almost became an accidental +Infraction; whoops redface.gif

Thanks! Any chance you also have input onto the onboard optical vs soundcard optical question?

It's going to sound the same regardless, the data going through an optical cable is all 0's and 1's. The Zero DAC also handles the sampling, so whatever sample rate the optical connection is set to in the on-board or sound card settings, it's going to get re-sampled to whatever you have it set to in the Zero DAC's settings.

There have been a few times when trying to report a post I almost rep'd.

I have zero personal experience but have been researching DACs recently. It appears that a lot of R&D has been put towards USB to reduce jitter. Whether this makes a big difference or just ups the price I don't know. From my reading it appears that optical is the better transport and USB is trying to catch up. There's my less than 2 cents.

Optical won't buzz from interference unless the cable is cheap. I would opt for the optical input.
My experience with optical is sometimes when turning on the audio the sound will sound kind of distorted to fix that turn off what ever is receiving the input from optical and turn back on.
